1.2 16v no drive in any gears

  Renault Clio MK2 1.2
Drove my Clio to work earlier and parked it up outside. Got back in it after finishing work and noticed a strange clonking noise coming from the engine bay. Checked it out but couldn't see anything so decided to drive home carefully.

I put it in gear and went to move forwards to find that I had absolutely no drive in any gears. Went into gear absolutely fine but just would not move at all. Clutch feels normal and no odd noises apart from the clonking and a grinding noise when turning the steering to the right although I'm unsure whether that is related.

Any suggestions are appreciated. For reference it's a 2005 D4F 722.

  dan's cast offs.
you can fit a bolt on plate with the box still in but depends on what state the diff is in and how much of the circlip/shim you can get out of the box.

Okay thank you. Do you know anything about post 2004 1.2s having a bolt in circlip thing similar to the 182 or is that not true?

My Clio 1.2 Extreme use's either JB1 or JH1 Gearbox, This is using Renault Dialogys software. I Can't tell you which it is, As the car 14 mile away at work ( As it's up for sale ). And i'm running a meg 225. Odd's on is done the above. and shat it's circlip

Yup that's what it's looking to be. My mechanic has made the same guess aswell and I'm waiting on him to have a proper look today to see if it's going to be a new box or not.

Circlip is a pretty small part that can be changed and then welded in, IIRC.

I'm sure the 172 Cups and Williams have had circlip failure issues in the past due to the fact it's a bit of a weakpoint. (Again, IIRC.)

I know and that's the most irritating part because they have a habit of disappearing into the gearbox and ruining it or the diff. I think all the gearboxes are pretty closely related across the Clio range hence why my 1.2 is suffering with a common problem on the 172. They fixed the problem on the 182 by using a bolted in plate instead of the circlip I believe

Just to update I got my car back from the mechanic today and turned out I'd somehow managed to completely snap the nearside driveshaft. He said it was impressive for a little 1.2, I have a talent for breaking things apparently.

I was going to mention the possibility of the driveshaft. Mine went at literally 1mph - on a slight incline and pulling out of a junction. Slight revs, letting the clutch as normal and CLUNK...... no drive.

Yeah that's the thing I originally thought had happened when it first lost drive, either that or the gearbox had shat itself lol.
I suppose once they're weakened they'll just go whenever they feel like it as mine literally went while I was parked.
Btw I love the look of your 182 in your profile picture?

Thanks! - had it since new from 2004 :)

Just another question. I think I have a bad engine/gearbox mount of some type as there is quite a lot of movement in my gearstick when I lift off and apply throttle again along with a kind of clacking noise if I pull away sometimes.
Do you know any way of checking which mount could be bad or have any idea which one it could be from excessive gearstick movement?

Yeah u can get solid or powerflex these will last longer than standard.
Ahh okay thank you. One last question sorry but I've noticed there's a bit of play side to side on my n/s wheel if I sorta rock it side to side when there isn't on any of the others. Do you reckon this could be the tie rod end, wheel bearing or something else?

sounds like it.
Your more likely to see a tie rod if u turn the wheel a little
