Best Renault Sport

  MK1 Mexico, Clio 172
Budget £10k.

What the hell shall I get?

This is purely a car for fun. 1000 miles a year. Couple of track days a year, that's it.

- Clio 200 Cup and loads of money in the bank.

- Megane R26, money in the bank

- Megane 250 Cup, no money in the bank.

What do you reckon?

Clio trophy. For a toy you want it to be special, a Meg would just feel like a daily you don't use much where as the 182 recipe will never be replicated again and obviously the trophy is the pinnacle of that line. And there's a chance it won't cost you much if you sell in a few years.

  Hi comp phase 1
Clio 200

Money saved...spend on modifying Clio for track...fit a diff...racing brake pads/lines...super charger..decent coil overs all round..bucket seats...strip interior...keep radio/electric windows/head lining for comfort!

Enjoy for Sunday morning blasts and trackdays

Meg 250 is epic but, if it's only doing a handful of miles, I don't think it's really worth spending that much money. Or, if you are going to spend that much, I would probably go more hardcore.

A nice Clio 200 Cup would be the one out of those for me. Cheap enough to not be a waste, but a really handy toy. I wouldn't do the Megane engine thing. Don't really see the point myself. If you want a turbo Renault, you may as well buy a Megane. Normally aspirated suits the Clio.

Meg250cup all day long. The prices are starting to drop so should get a decent one with change from 10k.

I have recently seen a couple of non cups for sale for silly cheap too, could add lsd box etc depends if you want the hassle i guess.

If just for track use there are some bargain RS 250's. Just get a Cup with the LSD. Few mods see over 300bhp, which it will take easily. Designed to take that sort of power too. I would advise you to take one for a test drive toocompare with your other options.

With 10k you could pick one up easily and have money in the bank!

Out of the list i'd probably choose the Megane 250, with a couple of simple mods to up the power as previously stated.

But for a car to use for fun and track days, I'd probably also consider a 172 Cup, maybe with ITB's, Diff, etc with some weight saving.

172 or MX5, National B license, fireproof suit, helmet and boots, a trailer and a couple of seasons of sprint trials.

What other cars have you got @Muzzman ?

£10k on a car that does 1,000 miles a year feels a bit like overkill if it’s going to be driven less than 10 times a year. I’m interested to know what else this car needs to do - tip runs, shopping, Ikea, school runs etc?

Also, an n/a Clio is a pretty different proposition to a turbo Megane. Do you have a preference of size/aspiration?

Has anyone suggested a Caterham/Westfield? That’s where I’d be looking.

Look for a red Raider, if you could get one for 10k, if not a Silverstone.
