misfire 172 cup

  172 cup
Hello all,

Bought my clio 172 cup not too long ago. It has developed a misfire which was bearable at up 2000 rpm under load. I changed the coil pack which has made it a lot worse. I noticed one of the ht leads had a higher resistance than the other three. Compression is good. Fuel economy has been fine. Also the plugs were clean. Any suggestions as to what could fix it are welcome. I tried calling 519 automotive as I live down the road from them but can't get an answer on the phone. Shame I really haven't had a chance to enjoy the car yet. It's been a bit of a disappointment due to this.

All the best

Richard

Hi Richard, I had the same problem with my 172 cup. Have you checked the spark plug gap? 2 of mine were out by a fair margin so I decided to replace all 4 with new ones and got a new set of HT leads for good measure. It cured the problem straight away and it now pulls like a train - as it should. It sounds like you know your way around an engine and have probably checked them but it's just an idea.

You're not supposed to adjust the gap on the plug as they're platinum tipped.

Check it has the correct plugs, these engines are SO sensitive to plugs. Should be NGK PFR6E-10

Thanks for the suggestions. Spark plugs are in good condition visually but do look old. I appear to have bosch supers at the mo. Leads look like the originals from new. What leads are people fitting? Magnecour ones look expensive! will try the ngk's.

Luckily I have another car I can use. I hate just buying parts to try and fix a problem and they don't work. Had a 911 that sent me nuts with an idle problem. You change everything and it's always the expensive part you didn't want to buy that sorts it!

Cheers

All fixed. Put the old coil on and a new set of ht leads and all is good now. Just need to replace the wishbone and anti roll bar bushes stick on some lowering springs now to tighten up the handling.

I just bought a set from GSF. £21 and you can get 15% off on collection if you print a voucher from their website.
Couldn't bring myself to buy the Magnecor leads at £80.
