Jekyll's RB182 Progress Thread

  A special one.
In the days when they used to push the engines across the road in NP?
Wiki says 25,but apparently there were only 20.
No mate, well maybe but I didn't work for the factory. Just a specialist that used to be in Kent.

I'm going back 23 years now mate.

Thank you very much. Thats a very nice comment to hear

I worry that beacuse i put loads of pics/info on what i do, people think its mint. Its far from it so i dont want to give people the wrong illusion when they see it in the flesh.

Haha, its only because i work mon-fri but am delivering this today.

It's a hard job but someone has to do it I guess  I love the look of the Zagato DB4, you say this is a replica, how close is it in terms of construction/engine etc to an original - or is it a genuine Aston with a rep Zagato body? Either way it's certainly something special to drive?

PS; I do love your RB Clio - always nice to see your updates. On the subject of tyres - how do you find the Neova Yokos on the Clio - I had a pair on the front of my Integra, but in slightly higher 55 profile, the Integra relied on having stiff sidewalls - it was always a hot topic trying to find replacements for the discontinued Bridgestone tyres that came on the Hondas when new & were largely accredited for the car's incredible levels of outright grip & composure - the Yokohams were considered to be the best of the modern/available tyres - I just wondered how those same tyres perform/feel on a Clio with the lower profile sidewall (in theory being even stiffer still)

For those that are interested.

In short i work for a company that makes Aston Martin replicas. These include the above DB4 zagato and also a DBR1. These our our own design of chassis and bodywork. They come in GRP and aluminium form. The former we do in house, the latter is by another company for us. They use our own design suspension set up and use jaguar xj6 front and xj40 rear components that are reconditioned.

Engines are usually a 6.3ltr GM plant or Aston straight 6.

We are only making a limted few left. This is because the company is having a change in direction.

We will be concentrating on our own design car called the Barchetta. This is currently a 2 seater no roofer, with the GM plant mentioned above and still our own chassis and suspension setup, on a GRP body but using all recondtioned xj40 running gear. Custom interior also. We are currently developing a hard top GT version to make it a all weather car.

We also do TV cars for the program "For the love of cars" in which we restore certain cars for the show. We have just finished this which will be shown soon.

We also do some artwork such as car parts for wall art and huge giant car airfix's. These are 1:1 scale. Here is one we did a few years ago

article-0-147546F3000005DC-48_634x429.jpg

We are currently doing a huge Ferrari 250 GTO airfix. My role is a bit if everything. Im no mechanic, fabricator, laminator or anything by trade but luckily my firm is pretty decent where they let you get involved, even though i only know the basics. I try and do a bit of everything. Its kinda like a paid hobby. Its only a small team but its a decent place to be, most of the time. As with all jobs, it does have its cons too. Im probably making it sound better than it is, but thats pretty much it in a nutshell.

Love the attention you've put into this - baring in mind the mileage and age she looks in great condition.
How do you rate the Bilstein dampers now that you've had them for a while?

Also where do you work? Looks like some lovely machinery around!

Keep up the good work and the updates.

Sorry, i realised that i never fully replied to your post.

I rate the bilsteins well. Damping wise they are spot on. I thought the Gaz's were good but i did find it hard to get that perfect damping after a few tweaks. On these you dont have that adjustable function but its not needed.

The qaulity of the shocks are very good. In fact, they are a very well made kit as a whole. They are quite light too. I believe the springs are done by eibach on these. They are a tad soft if you want to go very hard, but for fast road there perfect and even as a daily they are too. In fact mine is a daily.

Ive never slated the gaz before but going from one to the other id say these are superior. But they are more money so if your on a budget, its something to consider. However, they are worth the extra pounds.

A very well made kit that is proven. Bilstein have been around years and many clio guys rave about the b14 kit and i can see why. Gets a thunbs up from me and im happy with mine.

As for the AD08R's, i rate them also. Ive had a few moments where they have a little slip on wet/damp conditions but nothing that is uncontrolled. In the dry they are very good.

Ive had them twice now, on this and my old ph1 and liked them enough to get another set. I had Michelin PE2's before and hated them. Bought the RB with Pirelli P-Zeros and they was decent, but these are better.

They also look good!

I really like the AD08R, but can't say they're great when the tarmac gets cold.
I used to run Quantum 2 way dampers on my MX5 with AD08Rs and it was epic in the dry, decent in the wet but when it got cold the ADs really struggled with grip all round.
I'm about to get some new tyres for the 182 and leaning towards the PilotSport3s for fast winter use - I can't bring myself to use a soft side walled UniRoyal

Interesting workplace/job too - I used to do some wiring loom work for one of the more prestigious Aston restorers in Surrey and always loved the attention to detail that got put in, it makes sense that this has rubbed off into the way you look after your car

I never push a car hard anyway in the wet. Not my style. But sometime i will have a play on a cold morning and yes i agree, it can be a little skittish. More coming onto the power, say off a roundabout. In the dry though, its a much better story!

I want some better tyres on mine,i have the rainsport3 which are very good in the wet,but feels like you cant push them hard into corners and also there not a great looking tyre!.im after a tyre that also looks good & fits the alloy wheel,as the uniroyals look a bit balloon like on 205's.

Great progress.

Your going down the same route I wish to start, making a clean updated Clio. Don't stop the updates, no matter how small they seem.

The bloke below is the man to speak to. Yeah he's a bit of a nonse, but he does do decent stickers!

Oh hi @LeeRS

My idea tbh. Pick a colour, any colour!

My PM to you states otherwise sucker!!

Bought some coilover covers as i wanted to protect the Bilsteins from the crap on the roads. Went with the motamec ones in the end. The quality is very good, the velcro is nice and strong and they arrived next day

Had an issue recently where my fuel needle would constantly drop. Turned out it was f*cked so i got a new one. Current milage is 112.5k and i managed to find one on 111.k so pretty close.

Old one with needle issue:

New working one:

Unfortunately i dont have my Renault Sport sticker, so i have ordered another one from @LeeRS so i can have it like before. Pic of new milage:

Replaced the painted bezel and refitted the dash until the new sticker arrives. Ive also painted the new bezel off the 111k clocks as im not 100% happy with the finish on the current one. Ill lacquer it and fit it one the sticker is here. Since having all the recent suspension work done, it needed alignment. Took it to the guys down at Stortford Performance, where i always go. Great guys there and nice to have it done properly.

Ive had a lot of people asking me about my bulbs recently so i thought i'd take a few pics to show the output they all give. Pics are grainy due to being taken at night but you can see the output.

The sunstrip was bugging me as i was still 50/50 on it. I decided that because i didn't fit it right (cut around the rubbers rather than removing them and cutting around the glass) i'd buy another one. This time i went for a more subtle colour and got it from the main sticker guy @LeeRS again. Thanks mate

This time i fitted it correctly by remove all 3 screen rubber surround and cutting around the glass. Its a nice colour and also its lighter inside the car during the day/lighter conditions, but darkens in the night/darker conditions which is quite nice, rather than being constantly dark with the old black one.

We've had some crappy weather recently so its nice to see the coilover covers doing their job properly

Aux belt kit and PAS pump is hopefully being fitted next weekend and the driveshaft/clutch a few weekends after. Genuine driveshaft to be fitted

A couple of pics in the rain. This was pre new sunstrip, when it was clean!

Ive also ordered some caps from @renaultpartsdirect off a non sport to have as my 2118 center caps as speedline don't make them. These will be painted in Ford frozen white which looks to be the closest colour match i could think of. I may add a little Jekyll touch if i can get some stickers made small enough, but it may be tricky. We shall see.

I'm going to have to get some bulbs now, my output is nothing like that and as I won't be driving in daylight for a few months they might be a good buy!
