WP53 OKO - Glacier White - 172 Cup

Changed the bootlid at last

Cleaned areas and routed wiring etc

Old number plate snapped from an over kill of tape

Ordered a new one, but here it is before I cleaned and polished it up

Next..

The Cup decided to ask santa for a clutch...

Mean't I could fit my speedo drive box, Millers Fully Synth and an OE non-slipping clutch!

Tool's at the ready here goes..

This job was a complete nightmare working on the floor, barely above freezing temps, on axel stands, and on your own bench pressing it all!

Note the transport in the interim ...

What I found :dead:

Pressure plate.. bolt stuck in place and cracked casing

Other side completely broken off (piece was still bolted in the flywheel)

Gearbox casing scored but luckily not damaged at all

New Valeo Clutch, bearing, pressure plate, grease and alignment tool and plate

Boom! Aligned a beaut, box slide on first time on my own

Sump plug washer replaced and silky new oil going in

A huge amount more happened in this clutch / gearbox process, but very happy to know it's done correctly.

If I had a crane with me, I would of been one mount, or a few bolts away from pulling the whole engine out itself.




Anyway finally mean't I could clear this code!

The car was pretty lagged with all the work so a Karcher / Meguiars clean down

Gave the misses 225 a once over, however I only dried the Clio

Took it to the end of the street and back, speedo working, auto lock kicked in, and things were feeling good apart from the camber was miles out.

So went to pull the wheels off but the passenger side bolts decided to ...

Fix one, gain another I guess!

Will be sat around until the replacement hub arrives to save me faffing around with removing the studs

Always been real aware of wheel bolts since a garage years ago used an air gun damaging the bolt threads, the alloy it self, and chewing the lockers !


I had only just tightened these up, rolled down the street and back, and they un-done like toffee All on the passenger side hub

Glad they didn't pop off on a corner so replacing any suspect ones now but not a good end to the job at all, the clutch surprised me more, can only put it down to the heat from it slipping causing it as I have been nursing it since I've had it ?!


EDIT: I've just noticed one of the snapped wheel bolts are different !

Studs snapped on my beamer while I was driving it. . They will loosen with wheel off mate I got mine out no problem...

Yeah I need a stud extraction kit or something ideally as don't want to sit there drilling them, and can't get anything on them at the moment.

So will replace the hub itself and just sell the other one once repaired or keep as a spare.

Yep! Dropped enough to not disturb the steering but get the box out between it and the wheel arch. An easier way would of been unbolting the rack and dropping the whole frame really but didn't need to this time

Get someone to give you a hand
There is a guide on here to speed things up for you
Make a hard weekend of it, and you'll do it (If you know what your doing and you have all the bits you need)

It took me almost two weeks because of the following:

Working till 5 and it being dark when I got home and had to do it on weekends
The weather.. being stood in the rain covered in s**t isn't the best
Hitting a couple of problems on the way (CV Boot wasn't seated and leaked around a litre of oil onto the floor etc..)
DON'T DO IT AT CHRISTMAS WHERE EVERYWHERE IS SHUT

It was the selling point for me, however I could of had a far better car but I enjoy a good project and didn't want to go through the respray route, been there to many times. The paint on this comes up well where I have touched it apart from the front bumper which will get sorted with the mirror caps

Yeah will probably do that and get the belts changed at the same time along with water pump and dephaser pulley!...

I have no idea really, but my money suggests it didn't help, although they felt fine when I swapped the wheels over when I got it, and when I put them back on after the clutch change. I could understand if I used a breaker bar and jumped on it but I spun them on with a socket then used a wheel brace and just quarter turn nipped them like I've done for many years on car, never cream them up.

Never mind it's minor in the scheme of whats gone on so far mate

110% it hasn't got any map or cammed like the guy before mentioned, could tell that on the test drive

The Cup gearbox seems to have wakened it up a bit unless it's because I haven't driven it for a month and got used to the smart car lol

Here we go again... Continuing from the last set back...

cs_dave kindly sorted me a complete hub

Boot popped off the bearing

Re-seated but still leaking

Another gear oil drain !

Turned out the boot clip was my issue, no wonder I couldn't solve the leak, should of spotted this after doing the box

Degreased inside and out, now with permanent clip, pressed on with tool

Given the oil had been drained through three times, and I had lost half a litre... Another Opie's visit

DVLA pulled a Christmas cracker ...

Moving off the mechanical side of things for a minute

The passenger seat wasn't able to used for getting into the back, because of this

Still had the old seats lying around, and personally prefer the phase two handles, so they got used as donors for a phase 1/2 swap

The hole from the old handle, used some black tape behind, then super glue to pull it all in

Then used a small patch from cutting out the new handle earlier

Without the flash on this isn't hardly noticeable now its in the car Will do the drivers seat in time

Alcantara door cards

Cleaned these up along with a new set of matching black seat belts

Fitting time, replacement plastics, trims, new clips, parcel shelf etc

3rd rear belt swap

Found some more carbon wrap hidden away.. BIN!

Some other bits which were bugging me, why do people do things like this?!

Cam belt kit
Dephaser
Aux Belt
Cam shaft seals
Oil and Filter
Rocker cover resealed
Sump removed and resealed
and a couple of other issues put right he found (like the aux belt fitted the wrong way round and a tensioner :S)

Note the oil collected from the leak..

Re-coiled inlet plenum threads and replaced the bolts as they were all wrong and threaded!

I do the exact same when I get a car, go through it with a fine tooth comb until I'm happy its how it should be. You never have to worry after that as you know what's been done and know the car inside out.

The Williams wheels are only on until I sort the Turini's out, they need tyres and are in a hugely poor state from DIY painting

I had all the third belt bits with the rest of the seat belts and as it has non cup interior, why not really, the lap belt and single bench without headrests look budget imo

Ahh... I put a 182 interior in mine but the Cups don't come with a middle belt as standard so left it with 2 rear belts.

Im looking forward to starting on the bodywork but the exhaust I think will be next and having the alignments and camber set up as its driving all over the place and my ears are still ringing from yesterdays trip!

I would of liked the 182 interior but I do like the coloured Renault Sport side of the phase ones and the non holes alcantara

Now the weathers improving after the South West storms we've had lately, the rear screen was finally warm and dry enough to fit my CS interior sticker

Cleaned up the wheels

Deciding I wanted to change the exhaust, and opted for a K-Tec recessed exhaust system..

Hit pot luck when Prestigechris showed interest in my stealth system, as he wanted rid of his recessed one, so an exchange later...

Picked up some other goodies for the job:

Renault Red Centre Mount (got through 2 non genuine ones already!)
Renault Manifold to Cat Gasket Kit
Renault Cat to Centre Gasket
Genuine 182 Surround
Mikalor clamps

Off with the stealth.. where I found my exhaust rattle/knocking, heat shield collapsed and sat on top of the backbox / rear beam section

Washer and nut.. Sorted

Got a new Dremel, couldn't be without one of these for doing stuff like this

No more tippex'd? touched up tatty bumper..

Bumper back on and done!

Wasn't going to do the downpipe/cat on axel stands so dropped down to a mates garage

Nasty DIY decat and cheap / bent / glued gaskets

Rain and storms ripped the last one

The car is sounding 110% better with mostly all induction noise...

No howly, raspy, tinny, loud decat..

Almost silent now, but still gives a nicer and deeper note when it's red hot after giving it some

Next, another thanks to Kelv for organising the Pure Motorsport group buy

I went for the strut brace only to match the top mounts

Gave the bay a wipe down, refitted the K&N Apollo plastic cover, and removed a couple of bits to tidy it up

Things were going well.. until I had no starting motor one morning.. knew exactly why and found this predictably blowing in the wind..

Renewed the connection with a spare bootlid wiring loom I had (the heated rear screen connection is identical, even has the same colour wire and plastic plug), took the opportunity to extend it a little while I was there



Didn't rate the K&N since the exhaust change, so going to a BMC CDA, a big one..

Lastly thanks to leeroybrown for organising the Sprayshack bullets group buy!

Turned up today and over the moon with them
