The shafts are a pain mate, if anything goes it's a whole new shaft. This means if a gaitor goes, it's a new shaft. If a CV goes, it's a new shaft also.
Renault have supposedly revised the 1*2 shafts and made the circlips better, see if you can get a quote from your local dealers, they probably are not as much as you expect (i think renault are a little red faced at how often 172s need new shafts)
