Why torsion bar

Why did Renault put torsion bar on every sports car they did? From R5 GTT, Megane Coupe, 19 16V, Clio 16V, Megane 2 RS Turbo...why? Is there any advantage from it? Because other sports cars usually have shocks at the back, so the car doesnt swing at the curve...

So, why torsion?

Yep..

But, I noticed every car with a Torsion bar usually handles really well.. probably why?

and the fact that by using a torsion bar you save space in the boot etc.

Torsion bars are very compact and dont require the fitment of springs (which take up space.)

maybe the dont give the right ride comfort or maybe it comes down to cost - perhaps a macpherson (sp) struts at the front are cheaper do engineer?

correct, torsion bars dont offer as good ride.

E-type jags, porkers, beetles and so on use torsion bars.

Also a torsion bar gives just as good a ride as springs. Also a spring will break before a torsion bar.

Macpherson struts, springs etc are cheaper to manufacture thats why the newer models dont use them any more and also suspension set up ont he front gets complicated.
