What is it with 172 cup prices?

I recently sold mine for what I believed to be strong money at £2500. It had 70k miles and the belts just done. It was mint, properly mint. I keep seeing folk advertising them at funny money not any better than my old one. Any ideas? I know a lot have been turned into track cars but if I'm correct the 172 cup was the biggest selling 172 because it was the cheapest to buy?

I must be missing something! I must be worried that I won't be able to buy a decent one for a good price when I come to want another

It's the fact it isn't original which makes the price laughable really.

As a collector item sure, but I'd imagine most buy/bought them to use as track toys, at which point it's quite easy to just strip a normal 172 down. However I don't think the braking system would be easy to match- everything else (aircon/track/dampers) is straight forward.

That and the paint. Mondial just looks so good!

It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay at the end of the day. It's probably the second most desirable car of the MK2's after the Trophy IMO.

OEM+ versions are hard to come by these days, but as @Cribert has said there's not a lot of difference between the one he sold at £2500 and the one up for 5k right now. Your one seemed to sell almost straight away though pal, Probably could have got nearer to 3k. I sold my Cup on 64k in 2013 for £2750!

I've just had exactly the same thought as this. To command any high figure it needs to be totally standard and be extremely low mileage and even then it's not a collectors car and never will fly up in value like the v6 or limited edition performance cars.
