What don’t u like about your 172/182

I am close to signing on the dotted line but would like to hear from all of you re. things you dont like re. your 172 / 182!!

e.g. driving position, too small, too stiff ride, high running costs etc....

Please be honest

my only gripe is too much body roll on the 172, the 172 cup and new 182 even without the cup pack must be better

  Renault Laguna Coupe

Not much room in the back. Standard stereo crap. Room in the back is the biggest problem - everything else can be fixed with a few mods.

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4

room in the back is not good, only really a 2 person car for long hauls, std radio crap, ride can be a little harsh (especially on lond mway drives).

Wish the steering was a bit more talkative, other than that it is an awesome car for me being only 22

I dont like the rate my postman is delivering NIPs to my door, other than that the car is GREAT !! Only tiny gripe would be the handling needs sorted as its got too much body roll as standard for my likeing, but thats cheap and easy to sort.

Turning circle! Just have to use reverse gear a bit more. Can be embaressing sometimes.

Not keen on the rattle from the Cup holder area.

other than that.. its great!

Needs to have this number: 6 printed on the gearnob.

(and also needs the hardware to go with it.)

May 02 172 (no traction control / ESP):

Interior rattles

Electrics reset themselves occasionally (engine keeps running but lights/readout on display disappears and resets all trip functions to zero!)

4k rattle on exhaust (no longer 4k - rattles/rasps all the time!)

Notchy gearbox (esp. when changing down 5th-4th - have also missed the gate on an over-eager 3rd-4th upchange)

Pedals slippery when wet (and a little too close and offset - but thats minor detail - you get used to it)

Needs gentle persuation in the wet - major slides if youre on the power too early

pah, ridiculous question - we are hardcore Clio owners and you expect us to slate them !!! ;)

actually, had 2 x 172s and a Cup and now the Vee - and there is nothing that is wrong with them (as already mentioned) that cant be put right with a few mods if you choose. :D

  Ziel Nurburgring

needs a 6th gear for motorway journeys. Otherwise no problems as i dont generally have people in the back except the missus ;)

A few have said crap std. stereo??

I know the 172 Cup had a lower spec stereo but, thought that the 172 / 182 had a Hi-Fi upgrade to std clios??

A few have said too much roll on the 172, has thois been sorted on the 172 cup and 182 with cup chassis??

PS I know all you guys love your cars but just want to get the REAL living with one issues??

The Stereo is actually okay, if you turn it up a bit to loud though your speaker will fart.. I think I have now blown my standard speakers so its time to upgrade.

i dont get that much body roll, but it is present.

the 182 radio is ok, but i still binned it.

rattles are annoying relays click to loud, and the indicators are annoying!! (stupid noise)

Just fit an alpine hu and crank it up. solves about 80% of issues

Deffo needs a sixth cog...... 4krpm in fifth @ 80mph!! Bit of a ballache on long journeys. Engine management doesnt seem to know what to do when started from cold - very snatchy and jumpy. Fly-by-wire throttle has a fairly slow reaction time, making it difficult to blip the throttle on downshifts. It rattles. By f**k does it rattle. Apart from that its ace!!

Anyone with older 172s - how are they baring up?? Any longer term problems?? over 3 yrs old and higher milage.

My only gripe would be lack of a cruising 6th gear.

Ive also found that now Ive done 4.5k miles in it the ECU has settled down nicely, when it was very new it revved high when cold but not any more.

I have to say though, to everyone who talks about the 172 having too much body roll, did you all come from driving go-karts or what cos I really dont find myself rolling from side to side at all.

my only gripe was a really annoying rattle in the dash....was going to take it to renault on saturday to get it sorted ..........but luckily on friday evening i realise it was actually my new watch !!!! .....how much of a muppet would i of looked !....doh!................anyway im now watchless but very happy again !...great car......do agree it needs 6th gear but that wouldnt (didnt) put me off buying it :D

What really bugs me is the relay click when the wipers are set on intermittent.Click, click , blooody click.

Apart from that ...really happy

  Laguna

Turning circle, noticed that straight the way  im getting good at 3/5 point turns. Speakers also are pants. I guess we all suffer as above.

Relay noises and general interior noise. Used to have a beemer then a golf. A different class. Crap clutch bite, doors shut with bang as oppose to thunk, tiny boot, temperamental alarm, low revs rough (going to tune soon) crap speakers, seating position.

Biggest thing that annoys me. ---- I have a little gay green clio. What kind of lads car is that even if it is an exclusive. My old cars were BMW328i sport and then Golf V6 4motion. Getting a mortgage sucks. Roll on tax return is all I can say!

Faster than golf though

The fact that is says sport on the back! No self respecting warm hatch even would put a sport badge on! IMO this is why so many unsuspecting peeps try it on becuase they think its a clio with a sports sticker on the back!

headrests are alright its my f**king tiny self shutting ashtray that pisses me off!!!
if you press the elec window button again, b4 it closes fully, then it stops the self shutting mechanism :D

Turning circle is embarrassing.

Standard stereo is crap - reasonable treble and mid but feck all bass (my missus Astra LS 1.6 has a far better stereo, despite being an otherwise crap car).

Interior rattles - dont start me...

If I want to be really picky: the relay clicks are loud; and the auto wipers are mince (they cant keep up with the Scottish climate).

But I wouldnt change the car, I love it. Thats 1000 miles just passed and Im still wearing a big grin! Anyway, who needs a stereo when the engine sounds like it does... :) Dont be put off, just buy one!

It says Renault Sport

Not sport.
the sport bit is underneath!
Come on Tom surely this sis irrelevant it says sport full stop like you would find on a warmed over Yaris - that is what I dont like about it as the thread asked!

rattles, slippery pedals when wet, rattles, electric window regulator going, rattles, clunky box when cold, rattles, exhaust falling off, rattles, getting noised up by chavs in sheds, rattles

apart from that, i love my car!

Erm same as above. but Iv got a golf gti and thats just boring.. the clio has character!! get one thats had all the niggly warranty isses sorted and you will have endlees mile of pure fun!!

Had my Cup for 6 months, done over 13k miles (both on long motorway journeys and hard track use) and its great, no problems or warranty claims, just wish it had 6 gears.

ps - comparing the build quality to VW/Audi/BMW is pointless, just accept that its French and a hell of a lot cheaper for the same amount of fun.

well good points i took all the abuse i sent it

bad points crap radio that i have to agree and needs about 20kw more.or forced induction to make it fun

Indicator noise is a bit gay tbh, have no issues with body roll though. But do agree with the 6th gear, although saying that the box ratios are nicely placed together. Got rid of the std stereo and installed my previous one + upgraded it which to me makes a huge difference (being a music lover). If your coming from a smaller engined car then the fuel consumption might take you by suprise at first but then you get used to it. cant say i have any issues with the driving position.
This is my first new car (previous 1.3 escort) so to me this car is a dream. Had a peculiar problem with the engine cutting out at random times every 2 weeks or so which turned out to be a faulty relay switch, but since thats been fixed ive been soooooo happy!
Every day i drive/look at it i cant believe i own that car! I would suggest you test drive a 182 with cup pack then test drive a 172 cup if you can.
Good luck!
