Wannabe Newbie! Early 172... Imports?

EVO 6 -no for much longer
Hey all!

I am hoping to become a true member of the club with a purchase of a 172! I’m pretty excited about getting one and think I found a possible motor last night. I have a few queries that I wouldn’t running by you guys and gals!

1) The current owner said it originally imported from Ireland as all the early (51 plate) 172s. (although the stamp of the receiving dealer look German) He said that the are still all official UK cars but it has added another owner to the log book. Is this correct? Is there anyway I can find out anymore information on this?

2) The service history on the car is good except for the first service which wasn't carried out until 18k miles. Do people think this could spell trouble? New engine... no new oil!?

3) Has anyone got any things that I should look out for? (buyers guide type stuff)

Thanks for anyone who has the time to reply to this thread! I really appreciate it. time in need and all that! Thanks again!

Jonny

Hope to be joining y'all soon ;)

All RS's are technically imports, but the ones to watch out for don't have an alarm (identifiable by red flashing LED by gearstick) and window etchings on the glass. If they have these two things then it'll be a UK spec car, although if it doesn't then it should still be fine, but would probably need an alarm fitting for insurance reasons.

A late service is nothing to worry about as such, just check any service history he's got and make sure that mileage and dates all add up and there hasn't been much in the way of 'major' work carried out yet.

Also, if the mileage is around 50k (you haven't stated) then you want the cambelt and auxillary belts changed....

Welcome! :)

Thanks Ads! you're a star! That is exactly the advice I was looking for. The car has done 32k but will be approching the 5 year mark. Any idea on how much a new cam and aux belt cost on the 172? £300?
This is the motor: http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/CARS_popup.asp?odelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&make=RENAULT&model=CLIO&variant=172&keywords=&min_pr=2000&max_pr=7000&mileage=6&agerange=&postcode=sk9+7nf&miles=60&max_records=50&source=0&photo=1&sort=3&ukcarsearch_full=SEARCH&start=3&distance=15&adcategory=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200629242950939

What you reckon? ;)

service at 18K miles is nowt to worry about Renault forgot to inform all of their dealers that the service intervals are every 12K, not 18K like on the other clios!!!

if its a uk car it will have a factory alarm, import = aftermarket alarm

cambelt and aux belt budget upto £500 (use that to bargain with!!)

  172 Exclusive... For Sale
I went to see a Clio 172 Cup other week (The Car People in Wakefield), it was an import and had abs and air-con...

  MK2 172
Cannot be a cup if it had ABS. Some did have air con though as I think it was an optional extra.
