Turbo Conversion Reliability?

What kind of car would a 230bhp clio compare to?

A new astra gtc vxr, when my mac boost controller broke(snapped wire/accident) so I could only drive in low boost at 230hp, my Clio gradually pulled away from an Astra gtc vxr(280hp) on the autobahn at 140mph and was still pulling.

Medium boost is a different animal at 280 hp so I dread to think what a high boost Clio is like.

If I was in full boost he would have been a spec in the mirror, theres soooo much difference.

What like are they from say 30-110? Always wanted to boost one but at 2.5/3k Im not sure its even worth going low boost. For all the effort it would need to be 280/300bhp I reckon

I wouldn't low boost but it depends if you want reliability too.

I would say a low boost 230hp Clio is on par with a bmw 135I, medium boost at 280hp is on par with a M3, the one later than the e46, and high boost im not too sure but its going to be rapids.

the e46's are only slightly quicker than a standard 182 up to a ton ime.

Seriously? Are they not 5.5 seconds to 60mph? And then I imagine they go even better? I'm looking forwards to an encounter with one now, which I think will be a fair match, and my car would destroy a 182

My mate that I work with has one, when mine was standard it didn't go anywhere until 4th gear.

They are quicker, but not by a million miles, they creep away.
 
So a stripped, high comp ITB is slightly slower/on par with a standard E46 M3 (from this one video, taken at face value).

My low boost was enough to piss off a mk2 focus RS and a new Audi S1. C63 AMG got about 2 car lengths but they are ridiculous fast. Either way low boost is a lot faster than standard and in terms of reliability low/medium and high boost suffer similar issues with reliability from what I have experienced and read. Most concerning the ancillaries such as engine mounts and manifold bolts. Not the turbos or mapping etc.
 
Was considering possibly turbocharging my Clio over the next couple of years but it does seem more bother than it's worth. Would love one but couldn't be bothered with constant repairs to keep it running.

Without digging through loads of graphs, Turbos generally make more torque so I would guess they will be a bit quicker like for like power wise.

My old ITBd cup used to hang off the back of my brothers 320bhp impreza and was just as fast as alot of higher powered cars, mk2 FRS etc. Sounds like a low boost setup will be similar to it then.

I'm two weeks into having the ED low boost kit fitted now and still finding it amazing. No issues so far and i've given it some more times that I can remember lol. The car made 235lb-ft and 231bhp. No idea what it's as fast as or can keep up with and not too bothered if i'm being honest.

Going on book figures such as weight and bhp (driver weight not included) my Cup should be equal to a 135i in terms of bhp/per ton and around 220bhp/per ton but in the real world I bet the 135i is still a lot quicker - i've never come across one. Even so, 230bhp is still really good fun for a daily. Go for higher boost if it's more of a toy.
 
Mines low boost at the minute but has been very reliable other than an old sensor playing up not had any problems. Definatly goes so much better now it always felt too slow before. Could easily use it every day if I needed to .
 
I have a low boost ED setup 172 cup which is also my daily drive, and it was converted by the last owner. I personally have covered 10K in it over the last 16 months, It's been fine and proved more reliable than the last Audi I owned.

Two issues I've had with the conversion is a blowing manifold, which I think is finally sorted now. Other is the turbo rubbing on the bulk head sometimes under heavy acceleration causing a rattling (sometimes banging) sound. I've got some Vibratechnics engine mounts and upgraded dogbone mount to go on the car which should stop the engine movement.

Car is quick and the 4k torque rush is addicting. I've not raced anything on the road, but the previous owner commented how he loved getting the bemused look off e46 M3 drivers as they struggled to keep up with a clio:up:.

if i run the 172 engine then im only looking to go with the low boost set up, as medium boost seems to be unreliable, but im also thinking low boost will not be enough, so also looking into the 225 route, then it would only need a map to take it to 260 or so and should be a lot more reliable, only issue i am seeing so far is finding a decent car to strip for reasonable money and someone to do the wiring, although it might not be as hard people say, will need to look into it more tbh

@RichieJA - You asked about others who can fit the low boost
Both Engine Dynamics and ClioTurbo will sell you a DIY kit or both will fit a kit for you.
Other specialists like Beaniesport or SJM will also fit a turbo kit, either acquired from the above or if you collect the parts/ask them to get the parts for you.

Unless the fitting was simple I would like it fitted and tested by them, the low boost seem to be the reliable option long as the engine is sound

Any kind of modification invites potential risks and issues. The F4R standard can be problematic enough sometimes! As somebody already mentioned, you just need to go into it with eyes open, realistic expectations and a suitable budget (that will cover initial work and ongoing maintenance and repairs).

I had a 2.1 zvh fiesta turbo in the past it was very reliable ran for a year with only a melted relay which tbh I doubt was anything to do with conversion until it was upped to 280bhp and it died within 2 weeks guy who done it bought it off me for 3k so if I had it done 230 would be more than enough and I learned from that mistake

Lets say you want 230bhp, you can go to one of the specialists and get it done for about £2500-2750.

You could source all the parts yourself for about £1800 and try and them with a local garage, this figure includes the mapping.

I've a very good specialist who I know could do it but I'd use one of the big two as they do this all day every day.

My zvh was done with parts I slowly sourced over about a year and my brother who sadly passed built it for me, I should of left it as is but got someone else to work on it and they fucked it luckly they bought it off me but I reckon this time I will have a pro do it, I learned to do most work myself but think turbo\charger is well beyond my skill level.
Maybe someone on here might put a kit up for sale.

Won't be getting done till summer anyway she in the process of booking summer hols so if its going it will be while I'm on hols and have a date set
 
Fitting the bits for the low boost conversion is real easy it's only bolting bits on. Couple of fiddly bits but nothing hard. I think it could easily be done in a few days if you have all the parts ready to go. I guess the worst part is removing the sump for when you drill the block for the oil return.
