Turbo Conversion Reliability?

  172 Turbo
I keep toying with the idea of getting a turbo conversion on the Clio. But I keep hearing about reliability issues.

Do you have one? Is it reliable? Whats gone wrong with it? Who converted it?

It will depend on a) how well it has been built and b) how far you push the power.

Low boost, built well should be no different to a std car. High boost built on the cheap, expect problems

From what I have read, and people I have spoken to, more hassle than its worth.
Exactly, I've read the same, but it's usually the same one or two people posting. And with ED & CT churning these cars out I assume there are more out there who run the cars without issue?

I suppose its like anything, you only hear when it goes wrong!

That said its more power than factory will lead to faster wear on components surely?

But they were designed to have a turbo as standard rather bolted to the engine of a circa 10 year old car....

It's the same engine... There or there abouts!

Megan's are also a ten year old car. The Clio just hasn't had boost for the last ten so it's probably in better order!

Not something you'd want to do to a daily driver, I'd say.

But if it's just a toy, why not.

I know what you're saying, but the Megane was designed and built with a turbo in mind where as the clio wasn't.. all the R&D was carried out on the Megane to make as "Reliable" as it can be.

Im not trying to argue or anything.. just trying to add to the converstion..

I'd agree that it depends how well it's been put together.

If it's highly strung it's always going to be a lottery.

I cant add much other than people do it, then sell them about a month later. Whatever that says..;)

Whilst not a turbo, I have had zero issues with mine.

If built properly, and mapped properly, and you don't try to chase stupid figures, then I can't see them being unreliable.

If you shoestring the build / map, get it built by someone who doesn't pay due care and attention, and turn up the boost for "teh lolz" then don't be surprised if your engine goes pop.

Is it problems with reliability that are the issue, or is it people's expectations? I think too many people choose to spend x thousand pounds modifying a 10 year old car to use for 10k hard miles a year and are expecting to have exactly the same running/maintenance costs. You surely have to adjust your expectations.

I hear what people are saying about getting it done properly and not on the cheap, and you're absolutely right, but if you're putting more stresses on the engine, gearbox and everything else, things are bound to degrade more quickly resulting in failures that will need addressing.

Another suggestion - buy one thats already turbo'ed? Cheaper and (if its a known car) you know the works been done properly. Forum purchase only I'd suggest.

P.s. Has it really been 3 years??! Jesus.

Was going myself for a low boost turbo by Engine Dynamics, but was put off by mixed reviews and a few threads on here I think 3 cars where stuff had gone wrong. If you can maintain them yourself when they go wrong fair enough. But its a 1hr 30 min drive to my nearest specialist and could not justify the worry of stuff going wrong.Settled for the rs2 xtra and more than happy with it.Keith what about Imprezaworks Megane 225?

@banther - I've had it since Jan 14, it's done 6k since it's mot in 2013.

Trouble with buying one boosted is you don't know the car. Least with AD52, I know the car and that everything else is replaced, it owes me £4500 anyway.

t.Keith what about Imprezaworks Megane 225?
Nearly bought the R26 in For Sale, Greenlight refused to issue a mirrored bonus due to a fault accident. Trying another broker but having no luck. GL are happy for me to boost the Clio

It's always seemed a silly idea to me. Sink 4-5k into a 10-15yr old Clio. Really?
I wouldn't sink that much cash modifying a £10k m3, let alone a shitbox Clio.

(no offense intended, I've had 7 of said shitboxes)

just be careful who you get to do the work for you...

That's all well and good but most people will sell due to problems

I've got a clio turbo runnjng 330 with the 02m box, I've done 4-5 Trackdays in it and 3000 Mile.
Issues I've had due to the conversion are

Turbo manifold studs comjng loose
got the turbo tack welded onto manifold - 2 track days later no issues

Boost pipes popping off whilst on track - I need a proper bead put on the ends of the pipes instead of them just been flared ends

Gearbox mount coming loose whilst on track - simple fix is to keep an eye on all mounts after each session

Loss of clutch pedal whilst on track, due to 02m box using a hydrolic clutch I had to have a feed retro fitted and to start with the turbo was boiling the fluid so had the clutch line moved and then fitted a direct feed to the pedal box - now no more issues

Brake fade on track - turbo boiling the fluid in the brake lines that run along the bulk head behind the heat sheild - will need to re- route brake pipes along the other side of the bulk head or inside the car so the heat Carnt affect them

Other than that the cars been fine. And as you can see this is a track car and gets worked hard! I'm 90% sure if it was purely used as a road car then the above issues wouldn't effect you.

It depends what your reasons are to want to turbo your clio.

Just to point out that when the car is running 100% its bloody brilliant fun and they are quick, mine is 279hp 250ftlb.

Mine went in for the conversion early last September for the gt2560 plus megane internals, I picked it up in November last year completed.

Down pipe studs coming loose after every couple of days, they still do from time to time.

Turbo to manifold studs coming loose and blowing the gasket out - now sorted.

Miss fire due to new plugs being fouled from over fueling due to turbo studs coming loose causing air leaks - new plugs, sorted.

Banging from the downpipe hitting the subframe, I took it to Powerflow in Doncaster, they revealed that the downpipe was actually resting on the subframe, and that the gasket in the downpipe was too big and didn't fit and was squashed together when bolted up tight causing it to blow - full new poweflow exhaust now, sorted.

I lost 2nd gear totally in the first gearbox, bought a supposedly good gearbox on here which crunches from 2nd to 3rd - on the lookout for a good replacement box.

Dipstick keeps popping out - got a replacement dipstick which didn't help( I'm thinking excessive pressure)

The coil pack that comes with the package keeps vibrating loose.

Cam seal popped out causing a massive oil leak(didn't realise until the missfire) causing engine damage - at Clioturbo in for repairs atm.

All this happened within 10 months of driving and 8k miles(no track days) iv had a few other problems but these are the main ones that I can remember.

Dont get me wrong they are bloody brilliant to drive, and if someone owned one with good mechanical knowledge that could fix things themselves then id say go ahead.

Depends on;

- what you bought the 10 year old s**t box for
- how long you intend to keep it for
- how much money you have I suppose

I doubt I'd modify mine at all if it was bought as a daily. I'd keep it exactly as it was. But that wasn't why I bought mine.
