Traded In The ST for A Full Fat 182!

Just a quick hello message... My names Levi from Yorkshire and I've been an active member over on FiestaSTOC.

I've owned my Mk6 ST since August last year and I managed to dump a hell of a lot of money into to get it to 200bhp with lots of chassis upgrades and it was truly an amazing car with loads of low down torque but I've always wanted a Clio sport so here I am.

I've put a deposit down on a 182 with both cup packs and I'm picking it up at the end of next week... Can't wait!

I'm looking forward to doing quite a few track days in this... Is there anything to watch out for in these? I'll put new discs, pads, hoses and fluid on. I'll give the suspension a quick look over and get some decent tyres on. Does the Clio have any bad points in standard form?

Yeah the steering wheel is a little 'bubbly' needs a retrim... And it's fairly large, looks like it's come off a Renault lorry lol.

To begin with I'll use my CG seatbelt lock until I can afford some fixed Sparco seats.

I'm Clio through and through but why did you swap?! You'll never get the Clio to 200bhp easily or cheaply, it's barely got its book anyway!

The amount of STs I've seen on track too, they can easily hold their own, I would of said keep the ST especially with mass amounts of money in it

@con1981 Performance modifications were... Mountune cold air intake, Full Milltek system (4-1 manifold, sport cat and cat back), Newman fast road cams, Mountune inlet manifold and enlarged throttle body.

@DannyR I know the 182s are fairly highly tuned from the factory and to get any real gains from them you need to go with either ITBs or forced induction. I'm not sure what my plan is for the Clio just yet, I'll give it a shake down round Blyton and just improve on its weaknesses... I haven't got a plans to improve on the power just a panel filter and cat back.

I know the Fiestas are a very capable car and mine truely did hold its own against more powerful cars but it's time for a change... I'm a ford fan, always will be but I've always had a soft spot for Renault sports so I thought I'd give them a try.

@gally Really... Kind of hoping I'm not going to regret this lol? I though the trophys with Sachs dampers were absolutely brilliant? I can remember EVO magazine raving about them. I love your FRP!
 
The Trophy is a much better car than the ST, Gally has a thing for Fords and can't see past the badge. A 182 is a better car than an a Fiesta ST, anyone with an unbiased view will tell you the same.

One thing I will say though is budget for the 182 to go wrong, They are old and french something will defiantly go wrong with it, of course thats my opinion but they are knocking on a bit and I've had what you would call a troubled year of motoring.

I've stripped my ST and put it back to standard so I've got quite a lot of money back for the parts I've sold so I have got some money put to one side as I am expecting a few repair bills to pop up. I'll start off with new brakes and tyres, make sure the suspension ok and then I'll move onto do auxilary belt, cam belt, pulley and tensioners and the dephaser along with any worn bushes and mounts.

Nothing major just exhaust had to be replaced as it was a standard one, rusted to high heaven. Had to re do the belts etc as the dephaser was making a bad noise after 6 months of ownership (wasn't replaced on the previous belts) so that wasn't ideal but got the water pump and power steering pump done at the same time.
its now currently getting a new alternator, tyres and possibly clutch but the clutch isn't a common thing, think its not had an easy life, so don't worry about that. All in all not great but one of them things that happen, Its never broken down on me which my old ST did twice haha so I guess thats something. The ST was awesome but wasn't that involving to drive compared to the clio.

Bullshit! My opinions on this forum car wiae is based on ownership or a decent drive of the car. I'm a Ford fanboi but i'm sorry as an all round car the ST was better.

I never gelled with my Trophy, it was after a V6 TT also to be fair. I know someone else on this forum who didn't like his Trophy either.

The 182 and 172 are great cars and for the money I'd have another in a heartbeat. For what I used the car for and everything considered I'd have my ST over my Trophy.

My ST had a few mods to be fair aswell.

The ST isn't as good as a 182.
I'm a big fan of ford, but the Clio is the better hot hatch.

There is a difference between an everyday car and an superb hot hatch. After going in a Fiesta I'd have to agree. They're also be cheaper to run than the Clio ; no pricey cambelts if the oil changes are adhered to and the running gear seems relatively solid. They are down on power, but for what a 'belt change would cost on a Clio it would cost you that (with some hunting on eBay) to get the manifolds swapped to take you close to that ; Ford seem to really restrict the breathing on their cars.

Gally I'm pretty sure I remember reading a comment you posted when you had your trophy that you never revved it above 5.5k as you didn't like ragging cars, so that could have been why you never gelled with the car as you need to rag it to go anywhere. A lot different coming from a torquey V6

I think I was being a tad funny with that post....

Again lets make it clear exactly what I said, the ST was a better car for me and what I used it for. With the mods it was roughly 175/179bhp on the print out the previous owner had done.

If you're buying brakes, get them from @George@RTR_Parts he's a trader off here and I've had brilliant service when buying mine.

I will no doubt be getting in touch with @George@RTR_Parts in the near future then... Also been doing a little reading on the forum about steering wheels, mines started to melt is @snappy the guy to go to for a retrim?

The joys of having a French hot hatch I suppose... When I'm getting cam belt, auxiliary and dephaser done is it worth while doing water pump and PAS pump at same time?

I would look at a sabelt wheel mate. A retrim won't change the fact it's massive. Ruins the whole drive when you jump in one with a sabelt wheel you realise what a difference it makes.

I would get a smaller steering wheel not a retrimmed one. I'd look into a short shifter too as it makes the gearbox feel less s**t.

I'm pretty sure that, other than a completely different gearbox altogether, nothing makes the Clio box feel much better than stirring a pot of lead and rocks.

You will love it mate, I got my 182 as a cheap fun car, ive had it three years this year and i love every minute of driving it, even more so now its boosted :D

I never had a single problem when it was standard for two years, since its been boosted iv had a replacement gbox lol.
