Tracking a mobile...

I know police and stuff can track a mobile from the triangulation between masts and find it, but does anyone know of any way 'normal' people can find where a phone is?

If it helps it's on the orange network, and i'm not a stalker, but someone I know who left their phone on top of a trailer and then drove quite a distance before realising, so said mobile is somewhere between point A and B, and wanted to know if they could make the search a little smaller!

If it's an iPhone with mobileme then yes.

Otherwise it'd be much easier to go to the carphone warehouse and buy a new phone.

I'd say its probably in little bits on the road somewhere between point A and B tbh.

all mobile phones can be tracked just do a google search, but all web sites require a message to be send to the target phone asking for the owners permission.
