Oh dear :(

how fcuked are we talking?

what power is it making, how much boost pressure is it holding?

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

It looks like something has been sucked through the turbo and bent a fin on the compressor wheel. Also cylinders 3 and 4 are down on compression so Paul reckons two rods are bent as there's a bit of vibration which I'd put down to engine mounts. It's still making 257bhp and I did 95 all the way home from Leeds so I'll probably risk it at Llandow.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

I'll either get a hybrid turbo and forged rods or sell it.

It's due a cambelt in December as well so I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on it.

I fancy something V8 and rear wheel drive like a Corvette next.

To swap the rods you have to remove the timing belt... So not as much as you may think for the whole job?

LOL at sell it, avoid all LY's being sold at Dealerships in the coming months.

guess you'll need to change your avatar / car info ;)

Get hold of a 2nd hand standard turbo, stick that on and carry on as you are? Seems the best bet.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

gutted to hear about the turbo mate, hybrid should sort that out though.

or your only other option is to break it and sell me some bits ;)

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

What turbo does the R26 take? My Focus RS takes a Garrett GT25 and im still on the original. A replacement is only £370 so it may not be as expensive as you think.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Serves you right for sticking your willy in the compressor wheel. Seriously though that sucks. If it drives and pulls fine then keep driving it till it doesnt, just remember to keep the AA membership topped up.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Is it a Garrett unit because we have a guy on the RSOC who works for Garrett and he sells them at trade price direct to us and it works out so much cheaper.

Gutted Tim. :dapprove:

Ignore the floppy American crap, go hybrid/forged.

Or just buy Paul's .R?

Sorry to hear this Tim mate, but as you've said - opportunities (either American v8 or bigger turbo) now abound.
Thats what I consoled myself with when my diff went. ;)

Is the SC pool night on for the 1st still, I fly back the Sunday so will come along if it's still on.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

You dont necessarily need to go "bigger turbo" a hybrid will give just as much gain with good mapping.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

A hybrid TD04 (which I am running) can make 350~bhp with the right cam profile.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Yeah thats it if its set up right the gains can be massive. Im currently running 336hp and 380lbft on a normal GT25 but a hybrid can see nearly 400hp with no problems.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

i'd recomp test it a few times to be sure, and do a leakdown to check rings before making a decision.

if bottom end is healthy, as Whiteley says, slap a second hand turbo on it for cheap option or hybrid it.

Fred's got 2 spare heads if you wanted to sort engine plus seen cheap turbos on eBay. Bummer when they go, Paul clocked low compression on mine when I needed a new engine, that feeling, Erggh.

Hi if you're getting rid btw x

Is it quite a common issue then? As i'm pretty much set on an R26 (going to view one this week in fact) - slightly worried now!

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Best avoid buying any liquid yellow R26's from car dealers for the next few months then lol

LOL never buy a car that I have owned.

To swap the rods you have to remove the timing belt... So not as much as you may think for the whole job?

I'm going to find out how much it'll cost then make a decision

Trouble is you never know what condition a second hand turbo will be in.

gutted to hear about the turbo mate, hybrid should sort that out though.

I wouldn't break the car but do have the decat, itg, hard pipes etc that would make a decent amount back.

Sorry to hear that man :(

What's caused the f*cked rods though?

Running 333lbsft of torque for a year and giving it hell most days.

Serves you right for sticking your willy in the compressor wheel. Seriously though that sucks. If it drives and pulls fine then keep driving it till it doesnt, just remember to keep the AA membership topped up.

It drives fine and still making decent power.

Is it a Garrett unit because we have a guy on the RSOC who works for Garrett and he sells them at trade price direct to us and it works out so much cheaper.

Would you be able to find out if he could supply a Megane turbo?

Gutted Tim. :dapprove:

I wish I had the cash to buy Paul's R26.r. The thing putting me off going hybrid/forged is that I'm saving for a house deposit and was planning on selling my R26 next year to release a bit of money by downgrading to a 172 again.

Sorry to hear this Tim mate, but as you've said - opportunities (either American v8 or bigger turbo) now abound.

Yes, I think we're still playing pool next Monday.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Sorry to hear this Tim but it has lived in the fast lane since you had it. Hope you get it sorted or you get the Corvette you've been talking about for years.

Get the Vette Tim !

I'm tempted to have a look at this. Decent colour, low miles and a manual box.

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/...ette-lt1-rare-6-speed-manual-low-miles/677382

i'd recomp test it a few times to be sure, and do a leakdown to check rings before making a decision.

if bottom end is healthy, as Whiteley says, slap a second hand turbo on it for cheap option or hybrid it.

The test results were as follows:

Cylinder 4 - 120, 135, 140
Cylinder 3 - 140
Cylinder 2 - 150
Cylinder 1 - 160, 150

Paul said a healthy engine should be 150 - 160 across all cylinders.

Fred's got 2 spare heads if you wanted to sort engine plus seen cheap turbos on eBay. Bummer when they go, Paul clocked low compression on mine when I needed a new engine, that feeling, Erggh.

Interested in the whole car or parts?

Is it quite a common issue then? As i'm pretty much set on an R26 (going to view one this week in fact) - slightly worried now!

No, the turbo damage is purely bad luck and any issue with the engine will be because of running too much power.

If its a garrett unit then he will do it no probs but it has to be garrett obvioulsy as thats who he works for lol

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

i dont doubt paul has done a good job etc etc, but imo always always get at least a second opinion and ideally borrow/buy a comp tester and do it yourself. ;)

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Took it to Llandow yesterday and according to Chip was probably the fastest car there, not bad considering it's got a f**ked turbo and low compression
