Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41 - UPDATED - KONIs fitted...

It's coming up to a year since I bought the Trophy now and I thought I'd do a write-up on what I've done, the various different looks it's had and future plans all in one place.

As some of you may remember, I've had 2 Clios prior to this and not had a very good history with them (hence the thread title!).

Here's my very first car, the 1.2. Bought it standard, ended up like this;

A few cars later came the 172, again bought it standard, ended up like this;

Both engines went. After saying I'd never buy another Clio, a few cars later came my 7th: Trophy number 41.

I am the third owner, I picked it up last November with 66k miles, belts just been done, Yozzasport cat-back, full service history and a private plate for £3800. No idea why it was so cheap but it was too cheap NOT to buy!

It needed a few things doing, like the exhaust straightening, debadging, sticker coming off etc. but nothing major. :)

I quickly started to make it my own with a few new additions and changing things around.

Skoda splitter and 3/4 height plate;

Plain rear plate and tailpipes polished;

Xenons and flat-blade wipers;

Debadged and a bloody good wash. Snow foamed, washed with Dodo Juice shampoo, polished with SRP, waxed with Collonite 476.

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Cheeky!

I decatted the Yozza so I could put the 'pops and bangs' map on. Hell, it was ridiculous! Flamed every time it popped and they were like fireworks. Needless to say, I took it off again a week later and put the performance map on from Fastchip. The car already had an R-Sport ECU fitted by the first owner and it would rev to 8k! The Fastchip map seemed to smooth out the power and also limit it to 7500rpm which suits me.

Average MPG with pops and bangs map;

...and after a motorway run with the performance map;

8040178261_7b1f343573_b.jpg

Also had it on the rollers at RS Tuning. Made 183bhp with a ph1 airbox and decatted Yozza, otherwise standard. VERY strong engine!

A small cosmetic mod and my private plate went on (got a fair amount for the Trophy plate!)

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Never realised how cheap you got it, proper bargain!

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Unfortunately someone didn't appreciate the fact I'd done that, and decided to key the sticker (and boot lid) when it was parked up in Trafford Park. No idea who could have done it but what a ****.

8040284441_f7f1f99ca6_b.jpg

So my favourite Polski (Seb, sofaboy off here) said he'd have a bash at getting it out for me. Didn't do a bad job but it can still be seen close up as they went right through the paint :dapprove:

White sticker applied (I bought 4!)

...and a random CLEAN shot!

Next up were a few cosmetic mods. Carbon-wrapped some interior bits;

I know, my steering wheel is shocking!

I got some black vinyl put on the front and rear bumpers to see what it'd look like. I realised that the rear one was a couple of cm too short at each side so took that off after a while. I think it looked alright but I prefer the standard 'clean' look lately :)

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Some of you may have noticed the custom rear lights in the last post. I had these on my 1.2 and thought I'd try them on the Trophy. Looked alright I thought :) I also took the white 'ring sticker off and replaced it with a small black one on the bottom right of the tailgate for the time being to tidy it up a bit and gave the tailpipes a quick scrub.

Also, quite recently my front dampers got quite squishy.

Onto Cup suspension for the time being;

Not much difference tbh, apart from the handling :dead: it feels dangerous! Left them with Cornering Force in Harrogate after they were recommended by a couple of people off here. They're still with them now, just waiting on some seals and I can have them back. Can't wait!

8040384266_d0422f200c_b.jpg

The only thing that's really gone wrong with the car is the alternator started playing up, and eventually killed the car. Luckily my mate got me a brand new genuine part, and another friend fitted it for me for quite cheap ;) looked like this for a while and I was catching the bus everywhere :dapprove:

8040389443_d5c478a4d3_b.jpg

Luckily the new alternator and aux belt sorted it. She's right as rain now :)

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

The most recent thing I've changed is the wheels. Now, when I bought the car, they were COVERED in brake dust. It had literally baked on. Nothing would shift it! So they definitely needed a refurb. I had done a Photoshop of a weird colour that I liked a while ago, and thought I'd put it into practice and see what it actually looked like.

So I borrowed some black Willy wheels off Ben off here;

8040427321_c4d92aea50_b.jpg

Sat quite low on the 15s! (Also applied the 3/4 height plate I found in the garage from my 172!)

8040435034_b7037ee704_b.jpg

Got to work;

8040435182_14c2cf007f_b.jpg

Rays Racing Bronze. It looks more like Subaru gold, which is exactly what I wanted;

8040434920_c113b6751d_b.jpg

First wheel completed;

8040435348_d685fc97e5_b.jpg

Two more;

8040434544_16e50149b3_b.jpg

...aaaaaaaaaaand fitted. Not sure tbh but they're staying for the time being.

8040428151_3c79fafb40_b.jpg

Also Lamin-x'd the fogs;

8040434804_3fca3744a2_b.jpg

...and eventually peeled off the black vinyl as I'm going for a cleaner 'less modified' look.

8040428287_21bf0bef32_b.jpg

My 'L' fell off.

So that's how she stands today. Hope you enjoyed the read :)

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Not sure yet. He charges £25 to dyno them (before and after) and he said £160 per damper as far as I can remember, will update this with the final cost when I get them back :)

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Shouldn't be that much, prices are on their site - http://www.corneringforce.com/dampers.html

They are +VAT, and they don't charge for the dyno if they get refurbished. So it should be just over £100 a side, plus a little bit more if there is any special seals or bits of work to do on them outside of a normal service.

Ahh can't remember what he said now, just agreed to it hah. I'll update with total cost :)

Thats half the price of BG motorsport.
Exactly why I didn't use BG.

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Cheers. Looks a lot better in person, however they're being powdercoated dark again after I take it around Europe... again.

I like Bronze, I'd at least leave them like that over winter

Good read..the only mods that work on it imo are the xenons and 3/4 plate not a fan of any of the oter bits. but it is your car so down to you.

Aye that's the plan :) anyone have recommendations of a cheap powdercoating place near to Manchester?

Yup, not many people change the Trophy so I thought I'd be the first to try out a few new things. All the mods are reversible so if they look pants then I just change it back. You don't know what works until you try new things :)

Have a look at TheWheelSpecialist.

Ask Donna for a discount, they seem quite negotiable.

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Cheers aucky, that's right near my work. How much were yours if you don't mind me asking? PM if you like!

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

CAS in Bradford were pretty good for me, £1 an inch so a set of 16's would be £64

Might be £1.50 for some colours, it wasn't for me but it seems to vary from person to person.

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

With the £1 an inch, is that just for the size of the wheel or do they only do the face of it? That's fairly cheap and probably worth the travel!

Bit s**t that you put a pic of someone's car being thraped whilst in your ownership. Just my oppinion of course.

I kind of agree with you, but in my opinion buying a used RenaultSport Clio is like buying
a used Mitsubishi Evolution or Subaru Impreza, it's pretty much nailed on that it is going to have been thrashed to within an inch of it's life at somepoint in its lifetime.

Just my 2p.

Trophy looks awesome, so clean!

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

Awesome! I think the term is 'driven not detailed'. Never knew that was a pic of #41 Nik! :)

I think I'll give CAS a go Mike. What is the finish on that? Just the colour or is there some sort of lacquer too?

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

I don't think that is number 41, it's 28 judging by the plate.

Nah it wasn't lacquered, but the finish wasn't matte, it was a little glossy if anything.

Re: Third Time Lucky; Trophy #41

I would also recommend CAS as they do powder coat at £1 an inch and if you want lacquered it's an extra 50p an inch. The prices are +vat but they have also done a cash deal for me :)

Lol, they never mentioned vat to me, obviously I paid cash ;)

Lol chill out, it's not being 'thraped' it's just pf97 brake pads in action. Which also probably explains the stubborn brake dust problem Jesus posted about as the wheels were like that when i sold it. He knows it was driven enthusiastically for a good part of its early ownership like most trophys, and that's not a bad thing at all.

I quite like the gold wheels actually

Was definitely stubborn! Even 40 grit aluminium oxide paper wouldn't shift it. FFS.

It's been on a track I'd say 99% of it's life, and it's in excellent condition considering! It's no wonder it made 183bhp relatively standard, fast it all it knows...

It's literally burnt on metal sl4g. Needs bead blasting (refurb tbh).
I know, I had some Carb Lorraine'd wheels from Sir Dave lol.
