If your motherboard supports PCIe Gen 4.0 then go for the 980 Pro or the 990 Pro (the 970 Evo Plus is on Gen 3).

That said, you probably won't find much of a big difference in performance between any of them unless you are doing a lot of specialised or regular sequential reads/writes. The random access performance can often be close to negligible (a few percent at most) for a lot of workloads and for gaming.

990 Pro 2TB in my PC, super fast, definitely worth if you've got a gen 4 slot for it.
I only paid £120 for mine at the end of last year though, SSD prices seem to have shot up.

Couldn't you just do the same with a partition?
Even then, personally I'd want my OS on the fastest drive I've got, makes everything snappier, then a slower drive for stuff like games that don't have long load times anyway or other large files.

Setup almost done. Bought some monitor arms for the speakers, need to buy some steel sheet to bolt to the arms as they are just resting at the minute! Problem is I have a 2u amp for the speakers that I want to keep tucked away so I'm thinking of fixing to the leg with a rack mount.

The PCIe x4 drive is certainly quicker - and I'd recommend getting that, if your mobo supports it.

That is what I have on my list. Just waiting for pay day to roll round and I'm going to pick the RTX4070 and storage. Then I'll get it built. Quite looking forward to it, especially as in the past I would have just credit card the lot in one go and got it done, buying it in bits and have it all sat there in boxes has been hard for the last few months.
This is what I went with in the end (still not sure on the separate 970 Evo for the OS. I think its just me being old and having it drummed into me that you always keep the OS separate from your apps.

Just get the biggest and best NVMe drive you can and chuck the lot on. The established commercial benefits of having a smallish server OS drive and then having a large drive for apps or log files makes sense. But in a home environment - not so much. Unless you're @SharkyUK ...

With the drives above, personally I would sack the 970 off unless you like to store files or photos away from your main drive. Otherwise, I'd just stick with the single 990 Pro. And certainly don't be installing your OS onto a PCIe 3.0 drive and then have your games on a PCIe 4.0 storage device.

If you want to save about £30 also - Scan have the Asus ROG B550 mobo in at £139. It's the one I have and it's great.....

However.... there's now the whole argument of going to AMD's AM5 platform as that's the new standard from them - and not really a great deal more expensive. The Ryzen 5700X you have listed above uses the older AM4 platform. Still good - still capable - but I'd argue that if you're buying new from today - I'd personally make the step up.

That also gives you the headroom into the new Ryzen CPUs, and DDR5 memory support, instead of the AM4's DDR4 standard. As you can see - there's sod all difference really in price between this mobo and the one you selected.

No, but general consensus is AMD release first in Q3 of this year, with Nvidia releasing in Q4.

The AMD release will give a better indication, because Nvidia won't want to be too far behind for risk of blunting their sales. If AMD is late, expect Nvidia to be late.

The 3090 is the more powerful card (about 10-15% over the 4070 in real terms) with more VRAM, but the 4070 is obviously newer tech. The 3090 is also a lot more expensive as pointed out. The 4070 is a great card and I would stick with that unless you can find a mint 3090 secondhand for a good price (which might not be easy).

As for the separate drives for OS, games, etc. - as mentioned by Darren and others, I wouldn't worry these days. Just get a nice, fast NVMe drive and use that.

For the record, I only have multiple drives and suchlike due to the fact I run my business empire from home, too! And some of the datasets I work with are huge and, of course, I need to maintain separation between work and personal shizzle. For personal-only stuff, just whack a big/fast NVMe in and away you go.

Ah, no worries - it certainly won't be a slouch in any sense.

I've got the AM4-based Ryzen 7 5800X3D, paired with 64GB DDR4 (a bit silly and overkill - I certainly don't use all of that) and an RTX3090.

I've got two NVMe drives - 1x 2TB PCIe 4.0 and 1x 1TB PCIe 3.0. I install games on both drives - the slower drive for the less demanding, less 'sizeable' games compared to my main C: drive.

It is more than up to the task of anything I throw at it - and it might be a while before I even consider upgrading. However, my hand might be forced should a decent-priced 7800X3D cross my path.

Talking of power and heat on the x90 cards, my home office is toasty now the warmer weather is here. My new setup/fans do an awesome job of keeping the PC and components cool, but obviously, the expelled heat from the 4090 and CPU has to go somewhere. I can keep my cup of tea/coffee warm on the heat that it vents out the case when playing demanding games!

Use hardware info as I said mate to check the temps more accurately then if you need to do something you can.

Had a good day of gaming yesterday, played GT2 and Metal Gear Solid with the boy through DuckStation emulator. It's genuinely surprising how good PS1 games look when upscaled to 1080p and running at higher framerates.

Then I played a bit of Black and XIII using the PCSX2 emulator, haven't played those for years. Black has aged a bit but XIII still blows me away. The cell-shaded graphics and comic book style still look fantastic, and the gameplay doesn't feel particularly dated either aside from the control layout.

Then in the evening I played Ghost Of Tsushima. Jesus what a beautiful game, and what a brilliant port. Performance is great, there are loads of options to tweak if desired, and the game seems really good too from what I played. Story is solid, the combat is decent, can't really think of any bad points. Oh and the photo mode is great too, might make a new lock screen with it.

I did notice one weird thing, the framerate was fluctuating rapidly between 40 and 130 which was making the game feel stuttery, but when I enabled FSR 3 frame generation the framerate settled down to between 65 and 80 and felt perfectly smooth. The weird thing about that is I'm running a 10 series card which doesn't support frame generation, so enabling it should have had absolutely no effect 🤔
