1. what causes it and

Grit being dragged over the surface of the clearcoat, if you own a sponge throw the b*****d in the bin theyre the main reason you get them.

2. best way of getting rid of it?

As mark says a PC is best failing that use a polish (will contain a mild cutting compound and remove them) if they are deeper then use scratch X, then apply a wax with fillers in it to hide any left.

Scratch X by hand will struggle to remove anything more than minor marring.

Bad wash techniques/sponges/rotary machine polishing/poor polishing cause swirls but most cases are from machine car washes.

Always start off with the mildest polishs first, Renault paint is soft so in some cases DCAP and other harsh polishes are not needed as a couple off applications off a mild polish will work.

yup ^^^ Sponges trap grit on the surface and leave with what is in effect a bright yellow sanding block/scouring pad. A particularly grubby one thats been dropped on a driveway will f**k the paint up in no time.

:D
you should also use a proper waffle weave drying towel, and proper microfibre cloths, also when washing your car use 2 buckets, 1 for the shampoo and 1 to rinse
