Suspect gear linkage knocking

I have a light metal on metal chattering sound over bumps thats just started from nowhere. I can only here when the window is open and it doesnt sound like two ' heavy' parts banging - if you know what I mean. I've looked underneath and the only thing thats loose is the gear linkage. Just before it goes up to the gearstick, I can move it both forward/backward (obviously) but also side to side about an inch of movement. It also makes the same noise that I can hear when I move it myself.

My question is is this normal or should there be a clip to hold this in place just before it enters the car?
