slight knock when i move steering wheel

alrite guys something annoying me here

when car is not moving and if i move steering from side to side there is a knocking noise? im told i can have up to 10mm of play in the steering and still pass an mot? because i have checked bushes etc and car is fine when driving say 50mph and swerve the car no knocking at all? am i right in saying its the top mounts?

track rod ends I expect.

i second the track/rack ends very slim chance it could springs if it sounds like a twang but as in the case of my sport if its like a creak cracking noise it could be the full rack

sorry about late reply trach rod ends are fine i really do think its top mount bearings i shall investigate. slow progress atm tho as the car is at work all striped down and prepped for a respray

did you check the inner and outer ball joints?
