SHOCK CHOICE - PLS DONT FLAME ME!

phase one clio 172 in blu
Hi Just joined the forum a few days ago and just got a Renault clio 172 ph1 in odyssey blue (I think). I want to get the handling perfect. Basically I am looking for the best shock kit for upto £500.
my type of driving is as follows.
  • welsh A/B roads - to work everyday / the weekends / and night drives
  • some motorway work
  • hope to do some track days
  • I want as little roll through the corners as possible
  • I do not want to bounce all over the road because the shocks cant soak up the welsh b road bumps and dips.
I know there is a lot of info on the site and i should avoid spax:rasp: does everyone reckon these

would be the best compromise or am I better going for some coil overs like VMAXX.. any other handling touches I could do would be appreciated as well.

Thanks for your help

koni are a nice setup, but barely lower the car.

i would look at koni yellows and sportlines, however i doubt you could get them in your budget

Thanks for the quick reply, yea I noticed the sportlines seem to be a favourite, the springs that come with the koni sports kit say they lower 30mm the same as the sportlines?

Is it worth getting a set of poly pushes to put on at the same time? I have read some threads that say they squeak and need oiling?

the polybushes are better, but in all honesty i think you'd be hard pushed to actually notice a difference unless your existing ones are severely worn

I think most things on my clio are pretty worn! engine is good though but car in general needs some tlc. I will have to get it jacked up and check out the bushes. thanks

Koni's or Vmaxx. No point in getting just sportlines, on a car of that age the dampers will most likely be fairly worn.

get sportlines and if you need new shocks get standard they are good enough for what you have said you need them for and only £50 a corner. You say you just got the car, has it had the belts done?

rear shockers are a common fault, they just loose there goodness lol, bouncy and non shock asorbing

The belts are the first thing i am going to get done, theres a renault specialist down the road who should know what he's doing
I have a receipt that they were done at 55k but now its done 94k so its over due! 36k i think they should be done at.

94k ay . . . sounds well into worn engine mount territory also. Get them checked especially the lower dog bone. With you being new to the hole clio side of things, you heard of solid top suspension mounts? Not yet tried it myself but is meant to be a good mod on handling side of things and eliminates a lot of squeaks and strange noises from the front

Well thanks to everyone whos replied so far, looks like this a really good forum / club, I think I am probably going to go for the Koni's as I don't think the shocks have ever been changed and konis will be a bit of an upgrade at the same time.

good choice IMO. Make sure you budget for worn bushes whilst your at it too.

And before you ask the next question of brakes. Braided lines, ferrodo ds2500 pads, brembo high carbon discs and some decent fluid job done.

I found a link to these on my travels through the threads

I think I spotted the lower dog bone in ktec racing? but I suppose a new one from a motor factors would be ok.

Phew the modding list is getting longer by the minute, like my r5 turbo days!

haha its easy done. Yer there the compbrake version. Some people say there are better versions out there like the AST's etc . . . good old 5 turbo's had one myself at one point
