Purchase help needed. £2200

Okay so Ive just viewed what I think is a nice 182. Slightly on the expensive side at £2200, I just want to check I'm not paying way over the odds.

Its blue with no dings or anything, all the simple stuff like tyres and brakes are good. The belts had been done last year and it drove nice

Three things that made me question paying £2200:

Rattle from the front of the engine when we warmed it up, i think the dephaser? was a medium rattle, not heard in the car but obvious with the bonnet up, do I need to replace this and if so how much?

Air con didn't blow cold, he said it just needed topping up.

There was slight mould on the back seats and boot, slightly damp but not bad. Looked like it hadn't been driven for a while.
Oh and I have to tax it... lol

Whats the verdict?

Thanks allot :)

First of all I wouldn't say 2200 isn't that expensive for a 182 but from what you have described it could be a bit more if work needs doing. As for the rattle it could be the dephaser, did you check to see where and by who the belts were done? They are often replaced in the cam belt change also.

As for the seats it sounds like a leak could be causing the dampness, and if that was my car I would never let it get to the point of mould so could be an example of being looked after quite poorly.

Any pictures or links to the ad?

The car is being sold by the garage that did the cambelt and AUX belt - so he has proof that he did it.. but no Renault specialist. He said the dephaser hadn't been done, not sure why.

The story goes that his mate was done for drink driving and he (the garage) is selling on behalf of his mate. So thats why its been sat for a while I guess.

Yeah, I think what I'm asking is, is it stupid of me to get a car for £2200 that i know needs 600 quid spending on it soon

Spending 2200 then spending 600 on getting belts/dephaser etc done isn't stupid at all, its called peace of mind that you know its definitely been done and done by someone with a know-how with these engines which is essential!

Stupid or not stupid isn't the issue, why pay 2200+600(+), when you could spend say 2500 on an example that has receipts for the same work carried out - peace of mind can still be obtained while considering value for money.

Sums: Car 2200, Belts for Dephaser 600, Tax 260, and then anything else - now you're paying 3k for one of the less desirable colours, I think there may be better out there with patience and research.

I would say be patient and be prepared to travel. There is some amazing cars that come up for sale here owned by an enthusiast.

Makes no sence to buy the first thing you see like I have done before, then have to throw money at it.

I've done this before too and payed the price for it in the long run!! Should have been to see some more and had a good look round them so I knew what I was looking at!!

Good advice IMO. Belts + Tax + unknown mold issue. I'm out.

When 182's like the one below are getting sold for £3,000 you'd be daft to buy the one you've seen.

Absolutely cracking value for money that.

You might be waiting a while if you expect a car with recaros, wilwoods, reasonable mileage, new bits & FSH for £3k again, but there's plenty of very good VFM cars in the classifieds if you're prepared to hold out (ready to pounce!) for a month or so.

Yeah I know, no wonder it sold in two days.

Cheers for the advice, I thought it was a bit mad to consider £2200, think I just got excited lol. Ill keep looking if he still doesn't want to drop a fair amount money off.

If you do some searching about you can find the belts and stuff cheaper. Birchdown offer the full service with the cam seal for £459 inc vat.

But £2200 for a ropey 182 isn't worth. I paid over the odds for my 172 and while on one hand, I regret it because I'm going to be pouring money into it as I wouldn't happily sell it in its current condition without feeling like I had screwed someone over. On the other...iv now got a new project and I'm enjoying driving it and playing cars with it! haha!
