price to change spark plugs

  clio 172 cup
How much should it cost for a garage to change your spark plugs?
I've put my car in for the 36,000 service and also cambelt change, and he asked me if I wanted the spark plugs changed aswell. I thought why not, will probably be cheap as I'm having the other work done, and knowing the price of new plugs and gasket and time to do it. So was shocked when I was told another £150. That can't be the going rate surely? anyone know?

About £50 or less for the plugs and couple of quid more for a removal tool ,could have done it yourself.

Think Renault say the plugs will last 72K anyway.

£150 is piss take, it's not hard to do at all. Think Fubur as done a guide?

Yep, the plugs dont really need to be changed til 72k, I changed mine at 50k and noticed a bit of a difference.

Cost me £75 for the proper NGK plugs fitted at Angelworks amongst fixing a couple of other things.:)

The plugs are about £10ea iirc.

You have to remove the inlet manifold to get to the plugs, which means you should really replace the plenum gasket too when putting back together.

Yeah looks like i will be fitting myself. I know it's fairly straight forward, just thought it would be dirt cheap since having the other work done. Guess i was wrong there. Just curious now to know how much a garage would normally charge for the change.

he said it was including the plenum gasket but thats only like £5. I know they're charging £60 for the plugs but that's £85 labour...woah.

its a joke init, i work for renault, i think the labour rates r sick, we charge £65 just to put your car on clip!

But this is not Renault although they are renault specialists. I don't have a clue about cars, and not even sure if it's the plugs causing the problems but after reading alot of threads it sounded like it might be the case, so I thought I'd give it a go. Thanks for the offer anyway but think your a bit to far away for me. Think I'll follow the guides on here and give it a go

erm, plenum and leads come off to do cambelt anyway. TBH we'd charge no extra labour to fit plugs at the same time as a cambelt, takes all of 3 minutes extra

Might be worth contacting trading standards as youve been blatantly ripped off here.

You could get a quote from Renault to see what they charge for it and compare but as the lad above has said, they would probably do this when doing the belt change so either way its looking like youve been conned

have you payed for it yet?

  clio 172 cup
No, not paid for it and not going to. Luckily I checked out prices of the parts first or i wouldn't have had a clue. If I hadn't have started coming on cliosport I would have been mugged for sure.

To the book parts are £45, £30 for a set of NGK PFRE6-10's from ebay and £15 for the upper/lower inlet gasket and that doesn't really need to be replaced unless you damage it.
