Pressure valve on the fuel rail guard

  PH1 172
Sorry if that's the wrong name for it, not sure what else to call it

It's the valve that sits at the start of the fuel rail guard (will get a pic to explain better asap)

Well today it decided to pop open when under hard acceleration joining the motorway. Didn't know it was this at 1st, the power died and once I pulled over the engine died. Open the bonnet to find fuel bubbling on the inlet manifold and down the front of the engine.

Once I got the engine cover off I saw it was this valve that caused the leak and as soon as I popped it back in and secured it in place with electrical tape (to get me home) the car was running fine and got me home

My questions are.....

1) what caused this to pop open on the 1st place

2) is this valve now broken and will I need to replace it

3) how can I stop this happening again?

Thanks in advance

Yep as Phill says fuel pressure regulator and have a clip on them. It maybe that you need a new rail now if the clip has broken away from the plastic locator. should be easy enough to pick up a used one tho.

Must be from early phase 1 as phase2/182 and som elate Y plate phase 1's dont have them

Cheers for the quick responses.

Do you know if I can put a later ph1 or ph2 fuel rail without the fuel pressure regulator on instead? Don't want this happening again

I take it the pressure was too high in the rail and caused this to open, but what causes the build up of pressure?

Cheers

Phase 1.5/phase 2 uses single line setup so has different fuel pump too. Not a common problem so just get hold of a used phase 1 rail .

Thanks for the info mate

Will stick up a wanted post and see what's about

Do you know if I can cable tie this pressure regulator down/in place and it will hold until I get the replacement part and get it fitted?

I would get in touch with cliospares and just replace it tbh not the worse job in the world I imagine

While I am waiting to source this part for a reasonable price, does anyone know I I can cable tie the regulator shut to stop it popping open again?

Also does anyone know why this happened in the 1st place so I can prevent it happening again

Thanks

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
no, you can't cable tie bits of your high pressure fuel system together.

Someone will have a ph1 rail, put up a wanted ad. I sold one a few months back

Right after looking at this again I don't think I was talking about the right part at all

In the picture I have circled the problem area in RED. This is the thing that popped open.

I believe the fuel pressure regulator is the part circled in GREEN? If so then this is fine *touch wood* and no fuel has come from here.

The part in circled in BLUE is similar to the part circled in RED but sits the other end of the fuel rail

photo.JPG

What are the parts circled in RED & BLUE?

Why did the RED part open? Inspecting this more closely it just looks like a plug that just pops in and nothing appears to be broken.

Another thing that I noticed is the piece sticking out of my inlet....circled YELLOW....what is this?

Thanks

If you need a replacement pipe, I've got a few in the garage. £15 posted. It's not tricky to change.

Red is your fuel line into the rail. Blue is the return, green the regulator. Yellow is a bit of gasket, it's normal.

Sounds like you need a new connector on the fuel in line - I'm not sure whether it's a std connector or renault only.

No need for the pipe as that is fine, just need to sort out why that fuel rail connection opened and what stops it from opening i.e. a clip broken cheers though

Yeah I got a link for the part :)

Thanks for the link :)

Bit confused though, my fuel rail connection looks exactly the same as the above with no parts missing/broken, so if I replace it, what stops it from popping open again i.e. what part on my connector is missing/broken?

Thanks for your help

When I went out to check the car, I started it up and all was fine. I even drove home for 26 miles after it happened and all I did was popped the connector back in.... what holds them in place?

If you squeeze the ring around it in the right place it will pop off. Then you can have a look at it to see how it works - it is fairly straight forward, it has probably just lost its springyness due to age - if you take it off you should be able to see if there is anything else wrong with it.

Have ordered the part from ktec but the annoying thing is my stupid breakdown service (Greenflag via my bank) have said that I need to get them fitted by a mechanic so that I have a reciept to prove it's been done in order for them to resume proper service...what a joke!!! This is all because we popped it back in at the road side and I drove home after the guy put down it was temporary fix, yeah that bits fine but why can't I fit the bloody things an have to waste time getting a mechanic to fit them for a stupid bit of paper!!

  PH1 172
They may not check it out now but what would happen if the part I fitted just happened to be faulty and it happened again, they are bound to look in to it then aren't they?

They aren't going to check it out, it's just a tick in a box for them.

I doubt they are that efficient. But it doesn't matter anyway, new invoice for 0p showing they corrected defective work ;-)

You could take it somewhere and get them to say there was nothing wrong with it in the first place, just the clip had popped off, but I guess they'll charge for just confirming it.

Don't suppose you've got any specialists off hear near by I'm sure they could set your mind at rest.

  PH1 172
Just my luck they will be that efficient mate lol

Yeah I have the new part now so just want to pop it in to some where for them to fit it and just explain to them why I am not doing it.... but I am not sure whether they will give me an invoice for 5-10mins work i.e. approx a 6th of their hourly labour rate approx £10....do garages do that lol?

LOL. Nope.

Fit it yourself. I'll print you an invoice for £10. Failsport will have done the job if they ask.

Right hopefully this is being sorted tonight.

After phoning Greenflag again and having a moan I managed to speak to a nice girl who understood what I was saying and has now arranged for a mechanic to pop out and fit the part for me so that it's all noted it's been done. So between 6:30 & 7:30 tonight the guy will fit the little fuel hose connector and then be on his way... what a waste of peoples time though.

  PH1 172
Still not fixed!!!

The guy was here for over an hour and could not get the fuel hose off the clip, which means now I need to take it to a garage to have a new hose fitted along with the new clip :(

  PH1 172
Popped into a specialist and they are going to sort it during the week along with a couple of other bits while I am there
