Possible throttle pedal issue clio 172 cup

  172 Cup plus more
Hello all I am after some advice on what to do with the track car.

Recently at Spa Francorchamps the car kept going into limp mode after about 2 hard laps, with a code scanner it came up with P0120 throttle pedal position sensor A circuit malfunction.

As I didn't have a pedal with me I tried checking all wiring, cleaning all relays in the fuse box and removing and cleaning both plugs at the pedal and throttle body

None of this helped

My issue is the car is not road legal so I cannot just change the pedal (of which I don't think the problem will be there) and test it to see if its fixed.

After reading many threads I have seen lots of different ideas of what the problem is but I am very unsure.

My idea at the moment is to fit a new pedal, new throttle body, and change the wiring loom in both the engine bay and dash I know this is probably over the top but I don't want to run the risk of going to the next track day and having the same issue.

All advice will be appreciated

Gaz don't waste money changing parts and looms. Get the pedal tracks scoped and see first of all if there's a signal issue. If there is then it's a simple process of elimination working thru the connectors.

I do loads of these and it's rarely actual components that fail.

Cheers for the replies guys.

Mick, can you explain more what you mean regarding getting the pedal tracks scoped? I am more mechanically minded but will have a go at anything, also I have another issue being that I am an English guy in frAnce and the garages here are clueless, difficult and expensive and that's before I need to try and translate the issue to them.

Thanks in advance

You need an Oscilloscope which will plot a graph based on the varying resistance from the two pedal tracks. If there are any issue with the signal you will see them plotted in the graph/waveform.

It's not a cheap bit of kit and not many DIY's or garages for that matter have them unless they are electrically biased.

Ok I will try to see what I can get done over this way.

Thanks for your help, it's shame that the car is here with me as I'm originally from Eastwood which is close to you and my old man actually lives in Long Eaton..

I may send you a message if I have issues trying to sort it, if that's ok?

Mick soz to bother you my car had the heartbeat light and ecu light come on yday same error code, would renault have that kit

  Looking....
I had this last week and it turned out to be the wiring loom, where it enters the ECU housing, it had been rubbing and caused damage to one of the wires.
The car would go into limp mode, electrically warning & engine management light on the dash and the same P0120 fault code.
Might be worth a look if not already.

Had a good look around the wiring and cleaned all the relays and large white plug but couldn't find anything at the moment.

I'm still trying to find a specialist over here but so far cannot.

On another note though I was already thinking of doing throttle bodies, so I did that surely I wouldn't have to worry about finding this issue as the car could then be using a cable operated pedal???

It's the ECU that is causing the fault as it thinks the pedal signals don't tally.

Yes, ITB's would solve it

Ok Mick once again thanks for your help, I'm gonna still try to find a place over here that can have a look, then I will way up what to do, either trailer the car over to you and see family for a couple of days for go down the ITB route
