  2010 Clio RS Cup 200
G'day All,

Even though I've made some posts elsewhere I thought I'd come over here and introduce myself. A month ago I picked up one of the first 200 Cup 20th Anniversary Editions delivered to Australia. We're only receiving 30 of them and I got number 19. My previous ride was a MkIV Golf R32 which was unfortunately written off back in March.

Here in Australia we have only too models available for the Clio Sport. They're called the Cup and Cup Trophee. They all come standard with Cup suspension, Climate Control, Ipod, Cruise Control, Bluetooth and soft touch dash. The Cup gets the standard seats and 5 spoke Cup alloys and black bumper inserts, side mirrors and diffuser. The Cup Trophee gets Recaros, Anthracite (grey) bumper inserts, side mirrors and diffuser and automatic folding mirrors and BeBop alloy wheels.
Only six colours are available for both models; Racing Blue, Deep Black, Toro Red, Mercury Silver, Liquid Yellow and Alien Green. Leather and Projector lights are not available. The usual racing wing, side skirts, decals, boot trays, roof racks and floor mats are all optional accessories as is the TomTom inbuilt Sat Nav.

For the 20th Anniversary Edition we got the deep black roof and lip spoiler with black bumper inserts and diffuser but anthracite bumper splitter and side mirrors. The car itself is finished in Pearl Ice White. We also got Satin Black Speedlines and also some nice little badging. All in all a nice little package and in my opinion the pick of the models we've got so far.

The plan for the moment is to keep it pretty much stock but that hasn't stopped fitting some Philips Silverline indicator bulbs, LED interior and number plate lights to replace the standard yellow bulbs. I've also got a full length whip antenna and a stubby antenna from my old Golf which fits (currently I've fitted the stubby). I've also had the windows tinted.

Anyway enough talk here's some photos.
Cheers.

They're more expensive than in the UK as I think Renault are trying to position themselves as a slightly more premium brand etc. They've priced it at the same point as a basic level Golf GTI. You can't option them up as expensive though. Basically any car from Europe is overpriced here anyway. Am loving it though.
Shrimp on the BBQ, lol.
Cheers.

What's the badge on the doorsill btw?

It's a 20th Anniversary Badge, one on each side and then a little plaque near the handbrake with the same thing and which number of the 30 that came to Australia it is.

How does it compare to the Veedub Golf R32?

Handling wise it has it all over the Golf. The handling is almost telepathic and with the quick rack it's an absolute weapon when it comes to responsiveness and cornering. The Golf always felt like it had to be manhandled a bit. Not saying it wasn't a handler just it always felt like a much bigger car. Same with clutch feel.
In a straight line I think the R has it, mine was modified to a reasonable degree and I can't remember what they were like stock but I think it's 6.6 vs 6.9 to the Golf for the 0-100km/h (0-62mph, aren't I nice converting for you all). :p
Day to day the Clio is going to be easier to live with even with the Cup setup. I had the R lowered probably a bit too much which made it a bit of a pain over speed bumps and steep driveways. The Clio is a much nicer setup and while you can definitely feel all the bumps and almost tell the colour of the cats eyes it doesn't crash over potholes etc.

The Golf is miles ahead on build quality and material quality, that said it was a MkIV which is the most solid and best built Golf in my opinion. The Renault isn't bad though. I was a bit worried given French car maker's reputation but so far so good. Will see how it's going in three years I guess. The Clio is half the cost to insure, has at least 1/3 better fuel economy and stock from the factory is basically perfect so the need to modify and jack up the insurance premiums is negated. Plus it's something quite different here and more up my alley than anything new the VW/Audi group can sell that I can afford.

Lastly character wise. The Renault is great, it gets lots of looks and people have no idea what it is here since they only sell the Clio Sports and in limited numbers at that and I love the Recaros, the rorty exhaust and pumped up arches and aggressive styling however the MkIV R32 has it. The VR6 produces the most glorious sound ever this side of a 911 GT3 or Ferrari V8 and with its' fat in your face stance, it is by far one of my favourite cars of all time. Unfortunately mine was written off which is why I'm now in the Clio. I could've bought another R32 but to do it properly I would've needed about double what they're worth here to buy the car and then modify it to get it to the type of car that the Clio is stock from the factory.

Cheers.

Treza sorry to hear about writing off that R32!
(lost out all mods did you or got it insured and taxed accordingly?)

Yeah a VR6 makes all the right noises on song! As does a Clio V6! ;)

You know you pay premium for a Vee Dub... hence the Clio is more bang for buck!
In the end it is all about the driving thrills a car offers, no matter what the retail price or built quality imho.

Enjoy your new ride matey! Good on ya'!
