My key won't go in?

I left my house for college this morning and opened the car as normal and tried to start the car but the key would only go half way in, as if there was something solid blocking it. I tried shaking the wheel and everything I could to get it to go in but h ad no joy and had to get a cab . Any ideas ? Thanks

Have heard of the pins in the barrel going before iirc.
