As long as you change the oil at least once a year, belts done every 5 years, these engines will carry on being strong way past 100k miles, I got mine at 50k when it was 5 years old, it's now 14 years old and is on 104k and it's as strong and reliable as it ever was.

Also that service schedule is what to look for when buying one, if you buy from a member on here it should have been looked after, usually from the way they word an advert and how much info they provide will tell you if it's been looked after or not.

Depends what you mean by FSH, stamps in a book from Renault aren't really that important, partly because there too far apart for what these engines need and partly because Renault are utterly useless and shouldn't be allowed to touch your car, what you want is an owner that's kept the receipts from their oil changes and invoices from the belt changes or any other work done, a lot of these cars are cheap because they can be expensive to maintain if they haven't been looked after in the past.

Belt change is the key one, specialist job and quite costly, needs to be done every 5 years or so.
So if you see a cheap car, chances are it needs 5-600 quid of cambelt work doing ASAP.

Mine has done 135k now and still seems ok. Uses a bit of oil on track but I do kick the crap out of it. Would like to get it on the rollers actually, see what it has left.
 
I purchased my 182 FF on 100k miles in January with only recent service history (2 years worth) as the previous owner supposedly lost it, and no proof of the belts being done either even though on inspecting the cam/aux belts they looked brand new. Its been thrashed around now for 7 months doing 2k miles and 2 track days and is still running well using only 0.5L of oil in that time. The dephaser has a slight rattle on idle but it doesn't worry me as its the belts you need to worry about really.

Beauty of these cars is that if the engine does goes pop then its cheap enough to get a replacement for here or eBay with belts done and have it fitted for around £500-600 all in. So if one comes up like mine don't let the lack of history put you off and just haggle this into the price and you could end up with a real bargain.

Would you avoid those without FSH
If I was buying one again (and I often think about it) I would get one with no service history or evidence that the belts are done. Providing it drove straight and felt strong.

That way you will get it as cheap as you're likely to be able to, get the belts done somewhere decent and you have piece of mind.

As far as how long will the engines last, longer than the rest of the car providing you keep up with servicing.

the wife's 172 has done touch over 200,000 now, uses a little bit of oil and gets it's head kicked in when i drive it...


That's a good effort. We just took in an 03 Honda CR-V with 206k, would never guess tbf
 
Interesting read, I'm looking at Clio's at around this mileage and read a few similar threads to this which put my mind at ease.

I saw one today with 110k miles which had the belts/pulleys done 2 years/15k miles ago but the engine was making that diesel noise when warm between idle and 2,000(ish) rpm that I'm guessing means the dephaser is on the way out...

Hypothetically, if you were to pick this car up, would you wait 2 years and change everything, or would you replace belts, pulleys and dephaser asap?

If the belts weren't done by a specialist, I'd redo the lot tbh

Dephaser is already gone if it's making the diesel noise. That's all it'll do though, it's a common cost cutting exercise (doing the belts but not the pulley).

If you're planning on having it all done, you might as well do it sooner rather than later so you can enjoy the car without the rattle.

If I were you I'd find one that has no proof of the belts doing, then you can have it all done yourself and your mind can rest easy. Unless it's already fucked, a service is all a 172 will need to keep going.

Mine has done 152k they will go on forever if you look after it.
Belts are key, get a specialist to do it.
