judder from steering

  Clio 172 Cup , 200SX S13
Alright lads

When I turn the wheel of my cup at standstill or very low speed (parking) I get a judder through the wheel. Doesn't happen any other time IE when moving.

Steering effort doesn't change so i don't think it's hydraulic, although my high pressure pipe is a pirtek job with bits of renault in it , so possibly can't be ruled out.

Anyone had this ? Any ideas what , and how , to check?

It seems like it's coming from the rack but I am a bit sceptical that the rack itself could could be buggered.

There are a few other threads about this, I have also experienced it but still found no cure :(

I find it when doing so slow circle on full lock but it doesn't seem so bad when its dry. Sometimes it is confused with the warranty job for knocking/creaking on full lock but it is not the same prob as this was sorted on mine.

EDIT: Out of interest, are your tyres low? Mine hasn't done it since I had a new set put on strangely!

I have brand new tyres on the front. Sounds like yours went away though , mine is going nowhere :(

I might try and get a video , see if it's similar to what you had?

Just got under the car and had a look , one of the rack mounting bolts was slightly loose. Tightened it up and now juddering seems to be worse.

I think it's new rack time

What would be a reasonable check , turn through 90 deg? It doesn't squeal or anything like it might if too loose.

Also the steering doesn't seem to get heavier during this juddering so not sure it's a fluid supply problem, but I will check tension.

I'm getting this exact same problem now as of last night!!! And I know its the same as Bill's as I've witnessed his problem. My rack was changed about 9 months ago too!!!!! Bloody Clio's....

When i full lock or go round a corner at moderate speed, especially as i pull up onto my drive on full lock i get a funny clonking sound, sounds like something loose on the front of the car. I`m beginning to think it might be the exhaust moving about...as i have had all fixed top mounts and uprated poly bushes and the sound hasn`t gone away. OR it could just be the springs moving slightly in the dampers??

I think this is the top mounts binding on the turret. Any binding, even slight will be felt a lot through the steering wheel.

Thats definately not what we're getting, I get all those noises too and just ignore them.

Ours (mine and Bill_s13) is only at standstill while turning the wheels from left to right, a big juddering coming through the steering wheel. Doesn't happen at all when the car is moving.

Not just the tyres scrubbing on the floor is it? Checked fluid level? Maybe the pump is on its way out.

  Clio 172 Cup , 200SX S13
^ funnily enough I took it to a garage who said it was the tyres scrubbing. I don't believe it personally though, I might if I was on slicks.

Anyway i'm getting my rack changed on wednesday , so will report back poorer and hopefully judder free on wednesday night!

Fluid's full to the top, definately no pas leaks since I've pretty much changed everything on it over the last 9 months (high pressure pipe twice, pas pump and rack) all for other problems. Now this ones cropped up.

Officially the most unlucky 172 owner in the world......:(

If anyone is interested changing the rack has not fixed the problem. What a waste of money .

Don't know what to try next, top mounts? All the ball joints etc seem fine.

as c_w, probably going to be the top mounts. it's another 'live with it' problem on mine - the std top mounts are pretty poor

Thanks Henry/c_w. Car has clicked onto 70,000 on original top mounts so I've ordered a pair. Will report back with the results!

Top mounts were another fail , there was nothing really wrong with my old ones and new ones haven't sorted the problem. Another 50 quid down the drain.

Going away with work for most of the summer so will re attempt in september sometime. Next on list is to get rid of Pirtek PAS pipe , seems completely illogical but perhaps its setting up some dodgy pressure wave? Failing that PAS pump.

Its such an obvious and really quite horrendous judder, I don't understand why its not more obvious what the problem is!! Aaaahhh!!!

sorry if i led you to spend unnecessarily there.

if it's something that only happens whilst stationary, could you rule out mechanical problems by having a good look/listen at it from underneath whilst it's on a ramp or over a pit? might help you pinpoint where any noise/movement is coming from

  Clio 172 Cup , 200SX S13
no worries mate , it seems totally logical that it could be the top mounts.

I've looked it myself loads , had a couple of mechanics looks at it , I even took it to a 'french car specialist' who had it on a ramp , with and without turning plates who couldn't see anything wrong and said it was the tyres causing it (and charged 30 quid for the privilege) !

can sympathise as it's such a nause when you can't diagnose something

have you tried it with the engine off (i.e. hydraulics inoperative)? guess it might be difficult to turn the wheel quickly enough, although could try it on gravel (or did you try that on the turning plates?)

only other random thing i can think of at the mo (not that i've had this problem myself) is the lower UJ in the column - is that OK? i've read of atleast two people with serious problems with theirs, although not sure if juddering was a symptom for either

does it make a creeking noise when you turn? mine did this and it turned out that the steering rack was loose from when i had a new ps pipe fitted and they hadnt tightened it back up properly. might be worth a look.

So, for the benefit of future searches turns out this judder was being caused by the Pirtek PAS pipe. I know a few run these without issue so looks like I have been unlucky. Must have been some resonance or restriction in the pipe. Anyway , standard Renault pipe fitted (awful job!) and problem gone :)
