Some good points Roy. Is the flipside that (some) owners of newer/pricier RS brands perhaps overstate the egotistical attachment? Are any of the road going RS range really that exclusive in all honesty?

I reckon its about half and half round here between standard/tidy ones and lexus lit 17" wearing chav ones.
I knew full well there would be plenty of Focus RS digs. I'm not going to dignify those comments by responding. This isn't about that. It's about young kids rolling around in £2k Renaultsport Clios, generally annoying everyone and crashing, and of course loitering in a once well respected online community. More importantly, how genuine & sensible enthusiasts feel about this stereotype of the car they enjoy. Congratulations to those prize peni at missing the point by a mile, and attacking other cars because they can't think of an intelligent response.

As a non-chav (?!) driving a 1*2 occasionally, I personally couldn't care less. It's inevitable with any car in the hot hatch category. They all have Chavs driving them. Just the cheaper the car, generally speaking the greater the number.

I agree with what roy has said in his first post and its a shame but i think that once a car has got the tag of the "chav" car or the "Boy Racer" car then there is no getting away from it.
The Escort S2 is stunningly OE and very very clean and yet its a chav car even tho its 21 year old.
My vectra is a nice big comfy car with only 500 made but its classed as a rusty reps car.

I made that very comment in the driving stories section not so long since. It would appear that a couple of years ago a "had a play with.." topic garnered a myriad of "me too" reponses. Now it collects nothing but Fast and Furious quotes. I can't imagine that driving styles have changed all that much since then. More that the current zeitgeist seems to be one of an aloof, condescending, achingly cool scene. Not that patronising the living s**t out of some spotty teen who has just out-dragged his mates VTR isn't amusing. Just that some could do with remembering what they were like when they were a scant few years younger.
Personally, I'm too old to worry about being cool. Which brings me on to the subject at hand... I couldn't care less whether the 182 is seen as a chav wagon. I get called all sorts of names for driving mine and I would still go out and buy another if this one got stolen. What's interesting is the difference between the perception of cars from folks the like of which you see on here and the general populace. On here a EK9 is the epitome of cool. Among most people I know it would be monstrously, offensively chavvy. Among these "others" the 182 is far from chavvy. Certainly not in the same league as a Saxo or some old Honda Civic.
So, in summary to answer the original queston (IMO of course!): Among enthusiasts: Probably. Among the general populace: Nope.

In think as far as people's perception goes, definitely. Or less chavvy, at least.
I want rid of my exhaust because it attracts the wrong kind of attention. Not because I'm bothered about peoples opinions. But there's no doubt I probably get labelled a chav by some, albeit never to my face.

Golfs seem to be the de facto chav wagon round my way, for the younger generation anyway - clio's far too girly. To be honest, I think Ford, Subaru, Mitsubishi et al produce pre-chaved factory cars, for middle aged chavs who think because they didn't buy it all from Halfords, it must be uber cool. It's the same mods, only better quality. You'd hardly call a Focus R.S. a 'Q' car would you? So, what would you call it? Expensive chav wagon?

Kinda my point - To you, an enthusiast, it is a cool car. As it is to many on here. However to many it is simply an old Honda Civic. As such is probably chavvier than a bodykitted, bespoilered Halfords special Saxo and waaaay chavvier than a 182.
What an automotive enthusiast sees as chavvy is not the same as what Joe Q Public sees as chavvy.
Another, unrelated point - I reckon the colour makes a difference. I have friends who have no problem with my car (apart from the noise it makes possibly..) but wouldn't be seen dead in a striped RB 182.

I'm in exactly the same situation Lagerlout is (that you repliedt to), but I have left it on (the exhaust & the lexarse lights). I have been known to drive 'enthuasticly' too, but does that make me a chav?

If you have a loud exhaust and drive enthusiastically, then technically in the true definition of the word, yes you are a chav. Nothing to be ashamed of though, i was once a chav, along with many other people.
He consulted myself before hand but I never expected him to catch so many whoppers!
I seen less defending at the Inter Milan Barcelona game last year.

why dont you move on and let people do what they want with their cars? a few posts about it on an forum aint going to stop it .
They are just jealous IMO Roy, its not hard to fathom. Most people would like a car like yours, but when you have to take out a 150% APR loan over 12 years and pay £4k a year for insurance for a Clio that some might regard as chavvy, you can see why they get all jumpy.

Trust someone as vain as you to think of that kind of attention.
Attention as in being tailgated/egged on by chavs. Seemingly quite a few in my town.
