help cambelt snapped!

  ph2 clio sport 172
Hi everyone,

Cambelt failure on my 02 plate 172, read a few post about either rebuild or new engine but still don't know what route to go down.

Mechanic has said that all valves are bent and the hydraulic cam followers and camshafts are going to need replacing as well, quoted about £1000 for the work but will have to source my own camshafts and followers etc.

Thinking about the new engine route but don't want to buy a pile of crap, would prefer engine rebuild but finding it hard to source a new cylinder head, and also concerned about the possible damage to pistons from the valves hitting them.

The mechanic said they are marked but this is common with a cambelt failure but not an issue is this true?

Just wanting some advice on which route to go down, and if anyone has either some parts for a cylinder head or full one for sale or a 172 engine for sale. Iv looked in the for sale section and sent a few messages but nothing back yet!

one thousand pounds?

i assume head is stripped since you know all valves are bent so surely your paying for that anyway so its just parts and re fitting? also id be getting a specialist to do the work so they dont make a c**t of the cambelt when re fitting

Yeah car is at first garage AA could find they have taken head off, but been talking to Andy at Engine Dynamics and hopefully gonna get car down to them to sort out as I'm worried about the garage messing the new cambelt up when refitting everything.

I've never had to replace these after a timing belt failure on an F4R as the collision normally knocks the rockers off the seating so unless they've gotten under a cam lobe and jammed it, its unlikely (though if the cams have jammed it will have spun the pulley on tat cam so it is possible that the cam and pulley will need replacing in that instance). The G8T on the other hand pushes the rockers clear thru the rocker box so be thankfull you've not got a 2.2DTi!

Ask them to see the rockers and followers as these are not cheap at all and personally, I doubt they're doing them; Rockers are about £60 EACH and the hydraulics followers are around £30 each IIRC

Pistons *should* be fine to as its rare that they 'hole' due to valve collision but they will need looking at to make sure the bottom end isn't scrap.

The garage is miles away from me, like an over an hour drive. But they did say that the price was just for all work and other parts as long as I could supply a new head or the above parts as they have been quoted silly amounts for new ones.

Had the car a week, was in process of finding a garage to change belt as it was over due:(

Did you not check belt history before you bought the car? Or was it a cheap find?

Where did you buy the car, was it a private sale or from a garage?

Private sale, and yeah was a cheap find low mileage very well looked after. Obviously not that cheap now:eek:

Hang on, let me get this right; they want YOU to supply a working cylinder head and for an extra £1000 they will fit it along with a new timing belt?

FPMSL... I need to start charging more!!!!!

I know how it feels, tried to get my belts both done at a good price and ended up costing me near on £1000 after alternator bracket failed

Where in the country are you?

I'm located in Doncaster South Yorkshire, the car is down at Alconbury Cambridgeshire, but hopefully wanting it repaired at Engine Dynamics as its only 25 Miles away from where Girlfriend lives.

It depends on where you're from but yes, I think so!

Personally, if you're paying for the head i'd say £600 tops!

Cheers for advice, I have a friend who knows a kid up my way that rebuilt his when it went bang, but it paying garage for taking head off and then more£££ for getting car back up north to me.

Does the head actaully need replacing, if so why? Normally belt failures result in bent valves only and the seats/guides survive meaning a rebuild cost of around £75-200.

My cam belt went on my 182 at around 40k and 4 1/2 years, got the top end sorted by Renault, valves, cams and followers. only cost me £600 as car was fully serviced by Renault. Total Retail cost was £3200. Within 6 months and a few thousand miles it chucked a rod out the block. Next visit to Renault was for a new engine Total retail cost was £3600, cost me £1700 that time... But have been told by the guys in the know on here that the cam belt failure would not have damaged the bottom end.

I Know Renault did not check my bottom end after the cam belt failure.

He just said camshafts and ( dont qoute me but followers or something are dead as well, ) Just going to ring Andy at Engine Dynamics Monday to see what my options are, and if im paying out thinking of performance camshafts if they need replacing.

It is possible for a timing belt failure to bruise a bearing causing the crank not to spin as freely as it should but its more often than not, not an issue.

If intersted I have just removed the engine from my 172, I am only after £125 for it collected from Manchester.

The bottom end is knocking.
