Full guide to fitting 19 leather in clio

  20VT Clio & 9-5 HOT

This was sooooo easy…………..NOT! For anyone thinking of fitting 19 leather in a 16v then be prepared. It fits but it’s a real pain in the arse! At least the rears anyway.

1. First off I’d recommend getting a spare set of seats from the scrapyard. This way your not going to mess anything up and can then sell your old seats complete. Make sure the fronts are from and RT or similar with the height adjustable option. Or they aren’t going to work. And make sure the rears are the same as your current ones that fold down in two halves.

2. Once you have everything you need make sure you have the correct tools. You will also need a large star head bit (not sure of the size), and a wrench.

3. Take the frames off of the spare seats (from the scrapyard) by undoing the 4 bolts that actually screw in the main seat frame. Once these are off it’s a matter of doing the same with the leather fronts and swapping the frames over. This will then fit straight into the clio.

4. The rear seats are a real pain as they are quite a bit too big and the frames from the 19 don’t fit the clio at all. Starting with the rear lower (the bit u sit on). First take the leather cushions off. They simply pull out round the edges.

And try to fit the bottom frame into the clio so you can see how much bigger it is at each side. Use a pencil to mark underneath how much of the frame needs to be cut off.

Then back to the garage to start trimming the 19 frame. I didn’t note the exact measurement but it was about an inch from each side that came off. (see pic) I had to make 3 trips to the car to see if any more needed to be trimmed to ensure too much wasn’t cut off.

Once it is perfect file down the rough edges and put some rubber tubing along the edge (see pic) so the sharp edge is not exposed.

Also drill out the rivets that hold the brackets in place as these don’t line up.

5. Next I made 2 holes underneath the frame (see pic) so that it sits over on the floor of the clio flat as there are 2 scew type things that stick up making it a little rocky.

6. Once the base frame is ready the cushions can be put back on. They simply go on as they come off pushing the edges of the leather into grooves that go all the way around. The bit that has been cut off will look odd, but once its in the car it all squashes in and looks nice. Check that these now fit as they will be slightly wider now the cushions are on.

7. Now to the backs (uprights). Basically the cushions from the spare set of seats (from the scrappy) were taken off the frames and scrapped. Carefully take the leather cushions from the 19 frame. Next they need to be fitted onto the clio frame. They are a slightly different shape and are bigger so bits will need tucking in and hiding for it to look right. This is a bit tricky but once on side is on the rest go on quite easily. The same is then done to the other cushion. Just make sure that the bottom and top clips are not covered up obviously as these are needed to clip the seats back into the clio.

8. Now the seats can be fitted back into the car, start with the uprights as they need to be clipped in correctly at the bottom then at the top. It’s a little harder to clip than with the standards but give it a push and it clips in fine. Then the bottoms can be shoved into place. As I cut the brackets off that usually go into the floor at the front of the seats they are held in place simply by being a v tight fit. They don’t move at all so it should be ok.

Sounds easy? Well its not. But its worth it at the end of the day. It took about 4.5 hours in total which isn’t bad really. Although I do need to swap the front over tomorrow which is easy enough.

Hope this helps anyone thinking of doing the same. Thanks to Lofty and gaj16v for the tips a few weeks back and ideas about how to go about doing it all!

Cheers matey, Yeah I know a few people were thinking of doing this which is why I wrote this lot out. It would be nightmare just diving in there without any tips!

Just to note the 4th pic down showing how much was cut off. It needs to be cut right to the end on the right hand side. I tried fitting it like it was and it was slightly too big. See the pic 6 for how it was finished off.

Nice job mate! Did you make a cap and waistcoat with any leather left over?(only joking mate ;)).

Just shows what can be done with some skill and care!
