fitting 421's to a ph1 172

  02' PH1 172
Hey all,

So I have bought these for my ph1 172.
Problem is that back home there are no renault specialists really besides the dealers, and they tend to be pretty rubbish aswell.

What are the tools/tips/tricks/need to knows for fitting these to a std engine that someone who has no experience of 172's, would need to know?

Also, I have a unichip piggy back, would this be sufficient to run these cams, or would i need to go the omex/gen 90 route?

cheers

You need the renault specialist locking tool to fit the cams. Good luck getting that in SA lol.

Well, im living and working in London at the moment, so it should be that hard to get the things I may need.

any idea where i can get the tools?

just been doing a bit of scratching..

is it like these ones?

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=506231

I have some friends who are renault mechanics so should be able to get them off them of its just the std locking tools.

I'm more concerned about the actual tuning side of things.

like on a std engine, will it work with the unichip? will i need adjustable verniers? does the vvt stay or go etc..

Thats them, specific to the F4R iirc

ah ok.

seems they can bbe bought off the lazer site. So many kits on there tho, wouldnt know which ones to get. Seems like the kit in the link above is made up of diff parts from diff kits

use an RS tuner to map it, Henk is good (bin the unichip!)

will the rstuner give me better results than the unichip?

I got better gains from my unichip than anyone in SA got with their rstuning remaps, for half the price aswell..

please remember that the car is in SA, so people in the uk doing the maps is impossible.

Henk is in Holand, he can map them via the wonders of e-mail (sounds daft, but he knows what he's doing)

Unichip is made in SA IIRC??

I dont think unichip is made in SA, is by Dastek, seems like they are based all over.

ah ok, so he could supply me with maps from over there..
is the rstuner good enuff to map 421's properly tho on the std engine?

i think there is a fastchip based in SA aswell.. hmmm

you know if i will have to lose the vvt for these cams fred?

just found this in a search:

with the 428's you should get gains in the region of 15hp, They're as lairy as you can go on the OE ecu and requires a map to get the fueling / timing right.. the 421's will get more but this needs an aftermarket ECU..

guess I'll just have to ask Henk if its possible. I might combine these with a set of dth itb's or jms,s new intake. I guess if I go that route I will defo have to lose the unichip and get a standalone?

so it defo will not work as std with the cams and unichip then?

cheer for all the info Fred :)

I have some "wild" cams in and Henk has done wonders with the map, from where we started from and how she is now it´s day and night. And I am very confident the car will end being pretty good. Just don´t expect it to be as ¨perfect as standard¨ in how the car drives very low down, my cams are 286/280 duration, which aint that different from 421´s, don´t remember the 421´s specs though, but they are close to C&B and E&D and even Henk has mapped 421´s in the stock ECU, so it doable but it is said aftermarket management would be best. So send him a note pal, he is very good and best of all top service. He has custome mapped three times for me and not a fault

never knew the rstuner was that powerfull!

so just to be clear, the unichip wouldnt be able to do it?
