Finally given up on the clio

  182
i got my top mounts from pure motorsport, £117 delivered http://www.pure-motorsport.co.uk/details.php?itemid=143

you may be able to test if the insides of your rack are too loose- you can tighten up the gear from underneath with an allen key.

it may be worth checking your rack bushes/clamps as well. as you face the car from the front, have a look at the rack clamp on the right and get someone to turn the steering wheel back and forth. you should be able to see if the rack is sliding back and forth under the clamp.

hmmm, cheers for that mate.. ile have to look into that... ahh never i would of got those as the genuine ones were 100 quid lol.

hope you manage to get yours sorted. let me know if you do!

likewise

to be honest with the solid ones, i wouldn't mind if it had new genuine mounts instead. comfort v performance i guess, which isn't that great when you have handling probs anyway. keep it oem.

I'd bet my left testicle that it's your shocks.

i've got some eibach springs in my shed but don't know whether to bother fitting them or not. another half a day spent working on the car, i dunno if lowering it would do me any favours in its current state!

Why would lowering it make it better? This will make it worse if the shocks are shagged. Takes 20mins either side to get them off and check condition

Also, is it the same place that is doing the allignment? Their equip might be fucked

banging over bumps is usually the exhaust hitting the rear beam due to shagged mounts

where did i say it would make it better? three different places have done the alignment, all with hunter systems.

shocks should be kosha, i replaced the rears with brand new ones shortly after i got it a year ago as one of the rears was leaking, and the fronts have been replaced with items from a chap on here that had covered 12k miles/ 1 year old. the subframe mounts/bolts seem fine. the second time the box was replaced i did the work myself (with budgie) so got to have a good look at it all and nothing out of the ordinary.

i remembered now why i bought up the eibach springs earlier. it was last tracked before i replaced the solid top mounts and i think also the wishbone bushes so i think it's worth getting it done anyway, but if i was going to do it, i'd want to make a decision on the eibachs first. obviously no point getting it tracked then deciding to fit the eibachs.

i think i'm going to take it to sideways danny or fred for one last diagnosis on the handling. i think if anyone can fix it it's those two.

it went to danny a couple of weeks ago and everything checked out fine (apart from the camber being a bit on the extreme side) which left only a knocking sound coming from the rack area/newly replaced rack. it's currently at a renault dealer who have had a good look at it and have advised the sound is coming from the universal joint. they say there's no play in the joint and they wouldn't recommend changing it, but they've used stethoscopes apparently and that's where the sound is coming from.

sooooooo..... unless i accidently come across a steering column and feel like fitting it, it looks like i'm still getting shot of the clio. it's not going into anymore garages for this problem, apart from maybe to get some camber bolts to sort out my camber so i don't kill my tyres. i figured two well respected renault specialists and a renault dealer have had a look, i won't get much better than that. i'm going to run it through the winter- i figured i've spent a fair whack on it, i may as well get some use out of it- and replace it next year. i'm not against getting another one (a 182 if i do it again) at least i'll know what to look for. either that or a diesel for the commute, an A3 or VRS.

so... are you selling this or breaking it? I likes a good fixer-upper if the price is right.

i think it happened on the back of a gearbox change but it was a while ago now.

mick, not ridding just yet, will be next year when i've got the funds to replace it
