DILEMMA!!????

Hi guys,i have a dilemma

I own a 2004 1.2 16v dynamique 74,000 miles

My boss has a Wreg 172 with 65,000 miles which he wants to sell.

He said if i want it he will take my car plus £800.

do you guys think this is a good deal or should i offer a little less cash.

And yes i know i will use more petrol and the insurance will be slightly more, but that's not a problem.

I do a lot of motorway/dual carraigeway driving and know i won't get the same mpg :D

what do you reckon? do a deal for what he wants or not?..please help!!

No deal for me.

Your car is easy to sell - first drivers, low insurance etc. etc.

His is not - W Reg 172 even in alright condition is worth MAXIMUM 1300/1500 probably less.

Have a browse on AT/PH at what cars in similar condition / age / mileage to yours are going for and do the same for his. That'll give you an indication.

Quick search on autotrader and the cheapest 172 with sub 80k miles is £1489 so I'd probbaly take that if it's in really good condition. 1.2L 2003's with sub 80k seem to be about 500-800 mark.

You will probably get the same sort of MPG to be honest.

Price wise. I'd have actually thought a straight swap would be more like it. I could be wrong though!!

Ask him when the belts were done on his, and who did them. You need to see proof of a receipt. If they have been done properly and it's a ph1 172 in mint condition with no modifications, I'd offer him the £800 and yours.

If they haven't been done, I'd offer him £400 and yours. Then get the belts done by a reputable specialist immediately. And I mean immediately.

What colour is the 172 out of interest? Any photos?

my 1.2 has a noisy clutch release bearing and the drivers door doesn't lock on the remote, they know this cos i bought it off them for £500,few scratchs and a couple of minor trolley dents...door lock is getting sorted.

his 172 has just had the bumpers resprayed, full service and owes him about £950..£1000 he wants about £1500 for it?

all i know that his needs is 1 tyre....i know he hasn't changed the belts but think they were done about a year ago.

still don't know what to do :(

You could do with finding out where the belts and when the belts were done before you go further. Unless you're happy to pay the £800 and pay for the belts yourself after if there is no receipts.

or you could run it without doing them but if they havn't been done or done correctly it could die (or at least cause some damage!) :(

I don't get that bit mate, find out for sure if they've been done.

the 172 has been sat for 3 years only doing about 500 miles in that time....loads of history with it,pads, discs changed every year because of not getting used etc.

3 new tyres about 6 months ago...everything looks to have been changed/sorted everytime after it went for mot.

there is no receipt for the belts being done, but my boss has said that the guy he got it from has maintained the car regardless and it has had them done, just don't know when.

it's in very good condition too......the only faults i can see with it are the steering wheel needs re-trimming and 1 tyre will need replacing soonish.

do i take his word about the belts ?? also both cars have a years mot and 4 months tax

he will still want my car plus £800......i was gonna offer him my car plus £500...he will probably say no but if ya don't ask lol

Also think if something goes wrong with either car it is likely to cause bad feelings which you don't want at work.

Plus £800 his way is a rubbish deal IMO. He is playing on the fact you really want a 172, but in truth his car is not worth any more than yours, maybe less. Friend just got a 2004 1.2 paid 1450 and it needed a bit of work as well.
