Diagnosis for a ticking/chain noise?

Hi all,

A uni mate has a 182 on 84k. He was driving home this afternoon when it started making a very loud ticking sound from the engine.

His description:

"With my foot on the pedal it sound like letting a bicycle chain spin with the rear wheel lifted off the ground. When I take me foot off the gas it turns into an even louder metallic rattling".

He pulled over and called his mate for a tow home and is currently shitting bricks about his pride and joy.

Anyone have any idea?

Fred, we're in Stoke - reckon it'll be ok to your place?

He's adamant it's got oil in there but we'll double check in the morning.

Car is now f****d!

He checked the oil and said there was more than enough. On his way to pick me up the car suddenly cut out, few dashboard lights came on and it won't turn over. I have a feeling the engine is borked as when I tried to start it there was a slight sound of a metallic clang from the engine - kind of sounds like something is jamming when it's trying to start.

Any ideas from my extremely sh*t description?

Bit of an update.

He got his belts done recently by "some guy he knows" who obviously hasn't done it properly. He said (and I didn't know before this) that the car would judder from time to time and occasionally cut out on low revs.

So my guess is the belts haven't been done properly and one of them has raped the engine. I don't feel too sorry for him as I've told him a few times that the belts need to be done by a specialist.

Thanks for your help guys - unfortunately the problem just seems to be that my mate is an idiot.

indeed, please tell said idiot to take the car back to the idiot who did the work and tell him to sort it

Did exactly as asked haha! They've come to some agreement about covering the cost of the repair. Mate wants to get a new engine put in.

I've come across a 172 engine (currently still in the car) that actually has history etc with evidence of the belts being done 4,000 miles before the car took a rear end shunt from a flatloader.

Now I've got a few questions as I don't want to pass on incorrect info to him. I've been searching the forums and my main findings are:

Clio 172 ph2 engine will go into a 182.
Need to use the 4-2-1 manifold from the 182 engine.
Need to use inlets from 182 engine.

Am I missing anything else?

I understand that the extra power in the 182 engine was made from the manifold - so seeing that the 182 mani is going to be used, will he be wrong to expect the same performance?

Also, how does this affect the RSTuner remap? I've told him to take it off but if he wants to put it back on will he need a different map?

Cheers guys. I owe him a few favours so I'm gonna help him get his motor back on the road.

Engines are same just you have to use the 172 upper inlet and vacc line for carbon canister, map etc remains same

Fred,
You say to use the 172 upper inlet. Just to clarify, this is in combination with the 182 lower inlet right? Got the engines out of the cars and gonna start swapping bits over in the morning.

Any particular reason for this?
