Clutch on way out? Or garage trying to rip me off?

  Black Gold 182
Hi all, when i picked my clio 182 up 3 months ago the garage told me that all the clutches on clio 182's were heavy, after a quick search of this forum before i bought it i soon saw plenty of people saying their clutches were heavy so i presumed it was ok.

Took the car to a different garage today to have the windows tinted and when the mechanic drove it back out to me he said the clutch was seized/seizing and he said its going to go within the next 2 weeks and i should be careful because when it goes the car will not come out of gear so i should be on guard for it to go. And he said its a load of B******s that the clutches are supposed to be heavy. He told me if i had it fitted today it would be £225 suplied and fitted or £350 if i wait until it goes :S

As far as i can tell the clutch is the same as the day i drove it out the garage 3 and a half months ago and it doesnt slip at all, the gearbox doesnt crunch or anything it seems to change gear smoothly, it bites a little high but i also read on here that many of them bite high so i presumed thats normal too.

So... was he just trying to get me to buy a new clutch? or is my clutch really going and i should get it sorted?

If it doesn't slip, it's fine. That's what I've always been told. Get a better garage ;)

Nah, sounds normal mate. I had a brand new one fit on my old 172 and it was as stiff as the one they removed.

Garage is trying to bend you over.

Clutch is heavy in the 1*2's, if its not slipping don't touch it.

Can't see how he can diagnose an issue just reversing the car out if the unit unless he has a working crystal ball.

Why would it be cheaper to replace now than after 'it seized in gear', in its self a strange statement.

  Whichever has fuel
£225 fitted or £325 fitted if the current one fails?!

Do yourself a favour and never go back there again. Tell him to stick to tinting windows.

why would it be more expensive after it fails?

£225 is way cheap, too cheap in my opinion, we charge £399 for reference (maybe we're too expensive LOL!)

Renault advised me my clutch was heavy today, they offered no solution, just said that it was heavy.

I just said it feels the same as the other 5 I've owned lol

Cheers for all the quick replys! thought he was talking crap to be honest, ive got a 12 month warranty with the car anyway so wasnt too worried if it had gone but was just hassle i didnt need.

just to be a little fair to the bloke the windows look SICK!

Was going to drive the car down to you 2moz mate and ask for your opinion because my mates got his megane 225 in 2moz for a service, glad you commented and saved me a trip!

just wondering how much you charge for a fix for the wiring problem under the passenger seat? got the service light on and if you jingle the wires about the light goes off.

cant believe your even asking about this.

you go in to get tints, he ends up driving it and offers you a clutch change for half the price a specialist would charge.

Guy's a clown and with that bulshit id not even get tints.

The first RS Clio I drove was a 172 belonging to a lad on here, I took it for a test drive (was thinking of buying) and I couldn't believe how heavy the clutch was! I thought there was something wrong with his car haha! My 182 has a heavy clutch though, and I suspect they all do - but you soon get used to it. When I drive my mrs Sportka now the clutch is so light it feels wrong.

As stated above the clutch is very heavy and mines very high biting like my last c2 too, picked mine up the other day and when I get back in my dads leon fr I nearly kick the clutch through the floor its that soft and light haha.

As above, a brand new genuine clutch kit should not be heavy at all.

LoLz at the attempt to upsell though, two thumbs up at the dodgy garage. He failed to sell you a £17 clutch cable to as thats easily another hours labour on top for them.

It's not only 172/182's I have a 1.5 DCi and the clutch pedal was awfully heavy, clutch cable sticking!

  Clio MK2 1.2 16v
Even the 1.2's have a heavy clutch, it took some time getting used to but it becomes normal after a while. I put my foot through the floor with any other car I drive now haha.

thought you no when its going(springs are weakening/plates wearing)you get slip don't you.
mine is heavy hope its ok,
stay away from there if I was you.

I've driven a few 182's & a number of 172 cups and they've all had heavy clutches.
Sounds like they're trying to nut you off.

Replaced the Clutch in my 182 with a Valeo clutch instead of OE (OE is valeo) not as heavy but works exactly the same.

Cant believe some garages thats a joke report them to rouge traders, I bet its not the first time they have tried to pull someones pants down and I bet 50% of the time they succeed :/! Should of told him to take out a Clio Williams there a heavy clutch! They give you a dead leg in traffic.

Glad to see this thread actually :)

I've owned a 1.2 Clio and a 1.6 Clio both heavier clutches than other cars I've driven and owned, Picked up my 182 the other day and it was much heavier was a little worried but glad to have the clarification. would it defiantly slip first? I had a Fiesta zetec that had a hydraulic clutch and that just went with no slipping.

Cheaper to do now as he is going to park it at the back for 4 hours then tell you its been done.

cant be that cheap i was quoted £400 for a 1.4 P reg Polo...

My Ph1 1.4 clutch is ridiculous. It's like climbing a stair master. I like it though, it feels very solid, I think the heavier resistance makes it easier to find the bite etc, plus the strong spring action makes changing gear a total breeze.
The clutches in my Mum's golf and sister's Stilo feel like there's nothing there - pedal just goes in and out too easy!

our 172 cup clutch isn't heavy at all ....... what you need is a new clutch cable not a clutch , was the same problem with the old 5 turbo's and eventually they snap ..... nothing to do with the clutch itself though .
