Clio Williams JC5 Gearbox oil?

  Mk1 Clio 2.0 16v
Hi, Ive recently had the box off of my Williams re-conditioned, and the guy who did the job recommended i put some ATF or Dextron 2 gearbox oil in there once it's re-fitted. He said the oil i had in there before was too thick, but it was 75w 80 which is recommended by Renault for the JC5 box, and it had fresh oil only 12 months before the box was re-built.

The guy who did the job is a gearbox specialist and knows his stuff, so would like to think i can trust his judgement. But then again, I like to think Renault know the best oil to go in there own gearbox. Not sure which to put in?????

someone who recommends putting POWER STEERING / AUTO TRANSMISSION OIL into a JC5 box clearly isn't a specialist, slap him in the face, 75W80 or 75W90 - both fine - the later giving better hot protection

Hahaa! they were my first thoughts. I know some manufacturers do put ATF in newer manual boxes, but not a box of this age. Was a bit shocked when he said it tbh, but i know a few people who have had work done by him and they haven't a bad word to say. Think i'll stick with 75w80 then.

Any recommendations on which brand of 75w80 oil to use? The elf stuff which renault recommend cost a f**king fortune!

Want some good quality oil but dont want to pay crazy money.

surprised he's said it was too thick. I put 80w90 into my old JB3 when it was getting tired (crunchy 3rd) and it helped nicely.

I just use ELF 75w80, it's not really that expensive if you consider it's life span and that most gearboxes will do 70-80k without an oil change
