Clio Turbo from the Tub

  Renault Clio 172 Ph2
Ok, so I've been pondering on the idea of boosting the clio for a while and decided the other week to to go for the jump...

Had my eye on a few 225 heads on the bay for a while and came across this whole head a few weeks ago; inlet, fuel rail, tb and ex. mani for a bargain!

Whilst I was picking it up from the guy he asked if I fancied the bottom end which was good to go but only split as someone from eBay let him down... So snapped that up at a steal also. Now at least I can still drive around whilst building the engine up ey?!

So the plan is a boosted clio good for 250-300bhp and retaining as much as much OEM as possible...

Work to do:
First a strip down, clean up & rebuild of bottom Meg end
Deciding what combo of head and cams to use...
(G)T28 turbo
Meg Gearbox (If I can find an R26 even better :)) using DCi pedalbox
Side mount turbo manifold if I decide to relocate battery & header
ECU undecided, probably GEN90
Big brake upgrade

Engines gunna be stripped in the morning, fun times!

Look forward to this, guess your sticking with stock chocolate internals? ;)

I just see so many bent rods and ringlands go on pistons I just hate to see someone putting in the effort if it doesn't last :)

Stock to see how i get on, then once I've saved a bit and want to run a bit more, go forged!

DCI pedal box is still cable...

Thanks, must be the clio 3 box then, was told by a not so reliable source the DCi 100's had the same pedalbox as the V6….

To be fair if your no more than 260 and the pistons are in good nick you should be fine if the mapping is done correctly

Sorry to contradict you but clio 2 dci 100 has a hydraulic clutch :rasp: I know this as had to replace my hydraulic cylinder recently !

Good to see a build with a little more power, tbh i just don't understand the low boost builds!

if you haven't got a turbocharger yet, i have a gt28rs in good condition for sale.
pm me if you're interested :)

Can I have your reg (via PM) as I could do with ordering one up for my 20vt conversion. Seems the parts guy I got through to was hopeless.

Alright, I've tracked down two through some breakers on the bay, I've got one of them but do you want me to pm you the eBay user for the other?

So progress has been made!
Strip down has started; awaiting a stand so have to work from my work top for the time being....

Oil drain in a fashion...

Sump off to find all is fine so far...

And I thank the heavens the fact that for £40 everything is actually alright!!

So now it is all ripped apart, plan is to;

Degrease block
Remove loose paint & respray
Install forged rods (Pistons can wait)
Uprated bearings all round
New piston rings

For the time being I'm sticking to a GT28RS turbo so a log manifold will do until i want to go high boost w/forged pistons. Keeps the cost down as well.

Just having a think about everything else now… What are peoples thoughts; ND0 standard 225 Box and a Quaiff or the R26 F1 ND0 with LSD??

Goodies arrived!!!

ACL race mains and small end bearings
GT28RS Thanks to Tutuur

Was going to take my time with the build but things are coming and I want to get it done!! :D

With the mains, is it worth machining the tang cutouts into the block for added protection or remove the tangs?

Crap! You should have told me you where going to fit forged rods! Have those as well....

So a little update, there's been some slow progress as we've had a move to a new house over the last 6 months.
This has meant no man cave and no off street parking so I've had do go to the parents to store everything as well as working around house jobs...

Block is now fully stripped, cleaned, painted and apart from that I've not done much else.
All I have done is buy bits as I have no where to work, but as of next week I'll have a new shed! :)

So this arrived;
New rods...

Assembly bits...

An intercooler...

Some driveshafts...

And an ECU!! (Courtesy of @dmallett )
4DE4C2D7-1F05-4FD4-90C8-BC18687C8855.jpg

It came with coilpack, map sensor, 3 port boost valve all wired into a ph1 loom. (A loom that was a little tatty)

So I have to rewire a new loom as im slightly anal and with that making a plug and play connector to run in line with the factory loom so I Dont have to chop the original. (I don't know if any I you saw my thread in electrical searching for the ecu connectors...)
So was busy last night making a new adaptronic loom...

Just waiting on the engine loom connector end and a new shed and then I can make some more progress...

Been up to a little bit more...
opted for making my own oil lines up so after getting the parts have made this
648038B9-FDAD-4C6A-BA38-16904623BA44.jpg

Came in at around £30 all in! :grinning:

Then dismantled an old ecu (and perfectly good loom) to construct the start of my patch lead...

And here's the beginning of wiring in the adaptronic...
59384C30-18D5-46A2-917A-C5FFD8FBB4FA.jpg

After the end of this I'm going to write up a list of all of the ph2 pin outs against components as (as amazing the diagrams are) flicking between pages of two different sheets for wiring diagrams and their codes is a pain and I'm sure someone else who wishes to do this themselves would appreciate.

Hopefully this will be finished so I can just test it all works Sunday!

Excellent mate! ill be watching this! If you need any advice etc on anything give me a shout! I did this to mine a few years back with the help of Andy G best thing I ever did!

  Renault Clio 172 Ph2
Ok, question to those that have done their ph2 ecu installs whilst retaining DBW...
Have you clamped the stock MAP sensor input to essentially hold the oem ecu at what it thinks is idle, this then to ensure smooth throttle operation throughout?

  Renault Clio 172 Ph2
Bought one of these as well...

It's the VAG fuel rail which has the same bolt & injector hole spacing, just requires a bit of grinding to the alternator bracket so the fpr side doesn't foul too much.

  Renault Clio 172 Ph2
Update: patch loom in place and everything seems as if it is working as it should. Just need to send some wiring back into the car for a few switches.
However, when cranking there seems to be no sign of firing.

Cranking speed seems to be ok at 250-300 rpm and from that assume it is picking up the sensor ok.
Done a bit of searching (as my spare flywheel is at my parents) but am I right in thinking the missing tooth position at BTDC is 90 degrees, I've seen 75 somewhere but the ECU was already set at 89 (mapped for a ph1)?
