Clio RS200 running costs

Hey guys.

Just trying to get a bit of info on the Clio 200 but its the more boring things I'm after knowing I'm afraid!

- Servicing costs & intervals
- MPG
- Tyre mileage

I was always under the impression french cars are expensive to service but having never owned one I cant say if its true or not.

I'm pretty sure it would be worse for tyre life and servicing intervals with it being a performance orientated car and 100% certain it will be worse on fuel than what I have at the moment but its just how much that I'd like to know for sure!

Any general info that people feel might be useful feel free to chip in. I did look through the first few pages in this forum to check I wasn't asking something that's covered every day and there is already lots of information on.

I had a 197 for 18 months and here's my findings. MPG you're looking around 28 MPG combined....they also should be run on super, which is quite pricey. Tyre mileage for me was around 12k. Always replace them with a premium brand, budgets do have a detrimental effect of handling in my experience . Servicing every 12k, 36k included plugs which when i had my 197 were Renault only and pricey. Cambelts 72k or 5 years

MPG if driven normally is about 32-37mpg, when you put your foot down you can get low 20s
service internals was 12k (which i hit within 4 months) and a renault service was 180 quid i think, but a specialist will do one for about 110-150
tyres, if you replace them with the conti sport 3's that come on the car then they are about 100 quid a pop, i went through 2 sets on the front and none on the back (i drove mine abit hard 99% of the time)

tyres SHOULD last about 10k ish maybe more

Not a chance! My 197 was around 28/29 and thats mainly A/B road driving (20 miles a time ish. Mate who has a 200 gets lower than that, thats with mainly shorter journeys.

well i used to reset mine every day and on an average trip to work 40% normal road 60% motorway i got about 35mpg

when i boot it i got low 20s

Thanks for the replies. I don't do many short journeys or much town driving, it's mainly A & B roads. Tyres sound reasonable, I'm used to paying anything from £150 up to £180 per tyre at the moment and yeah I never put budget tyres on any car I've ever had. I shouldn't be having to worry about the cambelt as I'd only have it for 3 years.

Keep the replies coming, the more the better :) Particularly with regards to servicing costs as it can vary wildly between dealerships if its anything like Audi!

I've owned a 197 for 2 years and now a 200 for the past year. Mpg has been 25 to 28 around town and 30 ish on a constant motorway run. Tyres are about 110 a corner if you stick with conti 3's and I went through a front set in 10k miles. First service is anyhwere from 150/60ish at a Renault specialist to over 200 at a main dealers

I've not hit the service yet, but there's plenty of specialists I'd take my car to before considering the dealers, and they're about £120 ish
Mpg - well I got 33 on a trip to Scotland but normally I get about 26.
Tyres about £100-£120 for contis iirc

I'm a bit fed up of reading this, I just got 450 miles on the last tank of fuel with mixed driving, this was full tank to full tank refill and by calculation was 37mpg, the trip computer reported 35.6mpg (it always gives a slightly low value). Typically I get 35mpg+, the car has 5k miles.

I think the 200 is pretty darn good on fuel consumption so perhaps it really is improved over the 197 which was notoriously poor?

Went to the dealer for a 1 year service price and it's every 2 years or 12k miles, whichever is sooner. Result :)

Seriously, you either drive the car with a feather, or its a freak. I got 350 a tank at the most if i was lucky. SBV116 above who also has a 200, was my 'mate' ;) Thats pretty much diesel mpg!

I've never seen 35+ MPG, yet!

Generally sits in low to mid 20's, but then I didn't buy it for fuel economy!

Insurance wise it cost me about £100 more than the 182 for the year.

Servicing and tyres I cannot comment on as I've only done 1600 miles in mine :eek:

The running cost will very much come down to what kind of driver you are. If you think you are Vin Ibrench ;) and live life a quarter a mile at a time then the cost will be high.

I would say i am an average driver, no burnouts, let the car warm up nicly, have an annoying gf who does not like going fast, no track days however i do like to have a little blast every now and then when the conditions are right and normally within the law. :eek: I tend to stick to the speed limits as its just not worth getting hassle from the cops. Most of my mates say i drive like a grandad but i just like my cars being looked after.

I have had my 200 now for 15 months now and covered 14.6k miles.



Year 1
  • Insurance £450
  • Service with Rentech £175
  • Avarage of 30.1 mpg over the year and a high of 35 on some long trips.
Year 2 (so far)
  • Insurance £450
  • Road tax £235
  • Average of 28 mpg so far. Did a trip to Devon £52 fuel (full tank) got me 420 miles mixed driving. Oh and i got a free glass.
The only thing i can see costing me money in the next 2-3 months in 2 new front tyres which can be replaced for around £230 for both which isnt too bad. So would say 15k miles front tyres and 20k+ rears.

So all in all its not too bad as long as you dont look at the mpg :cool: but if your worried about that your looking at totally the wrong car and need a diesel. Within 36months i think all you will need to replace is 4 maybe 6 tyres.

I can get 35 mpg in the 197 if I take it easy and I'm hardly on a motorway but must admit mpg seems to improved alot with mileage but couldn't drive like that so usually average between 24-28

I ran the car in properly (as directed), I drive with occasional overtake and very occasional rev to the redline beeps, motorway driving is usually at a steady 80mph (i.e. the 130kph legal limit here), I ONLY run it on 98 Octane fuel. The last tank full involved maybe 10% city driving, 70% motorway and 20% mountain Alps roads....

im shocked at the MPG of these cars from what you lot tell me..

my 182 gets 43-43mpg on a run.. never get below 34mpg even when pushing it.. 200 are thirsty things!!

You can't really compare one Clio against another owners. I've found this with both sports I've owned, and from reading comments on the 200 this is the same. I did find with my R27, however, that the more miles it got on it the more economic it became, but that is also down to my driving style. When I bought it, the R27 started on around 21mpg at 9k miles. Steadily improving as the mileage increased. At 23k OTC it would see late 20s to early 30s on the daily commute (8 mile round trip) and I got an average of around 36mpg on a run using the CC at 70.

The 182 I just sold used to get 33 mpg at 33k OTC, again 8 mile round trip commute, and up to 40mpg on a run at a steady speed. I had a 1.2 Dynamique before any of my RS' and I used to only get around 33-36mpg out of that purely for the same reason that no car, whether Renault or not, does not perform economically when you're doing short runs - which I do.

Basically, don't expect MPG miracles when you get it, especially if you're collecting it new with zero OTC and not a one which has some miles on it. You’ll achieve what you achieve, and it’ll vary from owner to owner.

Servicing I found varied between dealers; I rang about four in my area and the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive was over 60 quid – so it was worth shopping about if you’re going to be taking it to a Renault dealer.

I bought the R27 with brand new Conti Sport 3 tyres on it; they saw me right from 9k up to 23k when I sold it, and they still had bags of tread on them when I sold – again that’s purely down to my driving style. A realistic average I’d say is 12k miles.

Had my 197 for 2 years now.

Avg MPG: 25
1st Service: £130
2nd Service: £141

Changed Front tires at just under 9k miles and they had a bit of life left.

Just ticked over 18k miles and fronts will need doing after I attend Milbrook this weekend, but would have lasted a wee bit longer otherwise. Rears are also getting close and may need doing after Milbrook.

Pads and Discs are approx 50% worn.

I actually have all the reciepts fro everything the car has needed, (including fuel!) over the time I have owned it, and keep meaning to add it all up. Approximately though 2 years ownership breaks down like this.


Servicing (2 years): £271
Tyres: £170
18'000 miles of fuel approx: £2'500

TOTAL: £2'941
Average per year: £1'470.50

Obiviously things like finance and insurance need to be added to this and brings my 2 years running costs to £9641.

Kick its hole in everywhere expect less than 10k, take it easy, who knows

Thanks for all the new replies. Some good detailed info, appreciate it.

I wouldn't be expecting it to get anything like my A3 in terms of MPG, its a hot hatch at the end of the day. Just trying to get a feel of how much extra money it'd be costing me so I don't end up with a shock if I decide to get one! My driving style and way I treat my car sounds very much the same as Gorms. Give it a good thrash when the time and circumstances are right but I don't blast around everywhere.

My 197 is ok on fuel.
No way near as bad as others have commented, but could go down to driving style.
But I wouldn't say I drive like an angel.

Minimum 32 MPG on a full tank with mixed driving.
Was 37 MPG all the way to the Ring.

Lowest was 14 MPG on Brands.

Full tank - 400+ is no problem.
It has always been filled with 99 VPower since I picked it up.

Perfectly normal, mine sat in the high 20's for the first 1000 or so miles.

It states in the manual that peak fuel economy isn't achieved until 1500 - 2000 miles have been covered.

See, nor did I. Always ran mine on Optimax, yeah once warm i opened the taps, but not stupidly so....... Dont use my car for work, just a 40 mile round trip of A/B roads, to visit the gf. The most i ever got from the 197 was low 30's.Its norm was 28 ish. I sold the 197 on around 42k, so well run in. The 172 Cup sits at around 36mpg, exactly the same driving style.

I got slightly (2-3) mpg more once run in and I found I got about 3 mpg more on vpower and not poverty fuel
 
I ran mine on optimax exclusively for the first 12k and then switched to tesco 99 for next 2 or 3k, and now sjsut stick with decent 95ron. No performance difference and no economy difference.

This discussion on economy is pretty much irrelevent, the biggest cost (for most people) during ownership of a car this age will be depreciation.

All of these 30+mpg's, how on earth do you manage that, i'm currently in a gordini and getting between 19-23.

I have had a few 200's and 197's and never ever got one above 29mpg...
