Clio newbee from Somerset

  320D E91 Estate
Hi all,

Thought I would introduce myself on the forum.

Been looking for a fast road/track car to replace my Leon TDI and have decided on a Clio 172. This seems to be the only real place for knowledge on Clio so thought I would pay and sign up even before i've bought one!

Will keep you informed when I buy my 172

James.

Hi guys, cheers for the quick replies.

I'm from Taunton. I'm hoping to attend some track days, meets and car shows next year once i've got my 172.

Me, Lesley, Shifty on here are all from Taunton, would be nice to have another 172 on here locally.

This forum has a wealth of info on it, Im sure it will be useful to you, when are you looking to get one?

Hi Dan, I'm looking for a 172 for road & track days. Ideally with a few modifications, good coilovers or lowering springs, exhaust, ARB etc. Ideally a phase 2 in silver, red or maybe black or monaco blue with some history, cambelt changed etc. Budget up to 2k, what you got in mind?

Hey Chip, its James (EP 400), I know i've asked you a few questions on facebook already but have also found lots of things on here as i'm now a fully paid up member as of today! I'm looking to buy now, going to look at one this weekend (the monaco blue one advertised on here in the for sale section, has anyone got any opinions on its modifications as i've not heard great things about vmaxx coilovers and i'm not sure about a bike can).

I'm also looking at a red 172 with a 182 manifold, matched inlets, ferodo pads and yozzasport exhaust system for £1200 or £1350 with 15" Oz wheels and good tyres. Problem is the car doesn't have much history from the sound of it and no proof of cambelt, dephaser etc been changed although current owner was told it was done 3 years ago but no paperwork. Would people be put off from buying a 172 with basically no history? Any thoughts would be great, many thanks.

A Cup is the only way forwards. But I am bias lol.

Coilovers on the road are rather uncomfortable. As much as I love mine it is a very harsh ride. Sportline springs were very good though.

Have you been in any Clio's as of yet?

Hi Emma,

No I haven't been in any Clio's yet. Will try and drive a standard 172 before I drive a modified one to see what the differences feel like. I would love a cup but I don't think I could live without ABS. I also like having air con & xenons. I will probably fit the cup wishbones as an upgrade to the 172.

The car on the road will be driving to track and used for drives on a Sunday evening so a hard ride won't be too much of a problem. Work is only a mile away and we have another car.

The abs to me wasn't an issue at all, neither was the aircon but I'm a girl so I'm always cold lol. I have upgraded to xenons a though.

I'll take you out for a trip in mine if you want to show you the difference between standard and coilovers.

Hi mate, didnt realise it was you!

If buying without history, just budget to get a cambelt done by a specialist (danpl6 on here for example comes highly recommended, including by me) straight away, as thats really the only particularly important bit of service history that matters.

As mentioned before, cup shocks are better that standard but easily retrofitted, same for cup wishbones to add caster (or just redrill the holes in the standard ones to save money)

Coilover wise, sadly they are big money for a decent set for a 172, like approx the same amount as you are budgeting for the whole car.

Yeah Chip thought i'd join up as you had mentioned the site on facebook.

Yeah, how much is it usually for cambelt, dephaser etc?

So suspension wise its better to get a cup setup (shocks & wishbones) with eibach springs then to go for cheap coilovers?

I missed out on viewing the silver phase 1 172 listed on here as I saw it on gumtree but it didn't have a phone number. That has £1000 worth of gaz coilovers on it.

Yeah i've not had a car without ABS for years and it has saved me a few times!! If the cup had ABS I might well have decided to buy a cup instead. Yeah xenons are a nice upgrade for the cup, always looks better in the dark! That might be good to have a ride in both a standard and coilover'd clio as the ones i'm looking at are around 200 miles away!

Cool :)

300-400 for belt change, add a couple of hundred for dephasor, its not a cheap job sadly, and TBH its a bit of a b**ch to DIY as well.

Yes I would sooner have some cup shocks and eibach (or the new cooksport look good although ive not tried them) than the cheaper coilovers personally.
H&R / Bilstein / Gaz are the sort of coilovers I would be looking at for some road and some track use, or the V1 KWs, all of which are a lot dearer than the cup dampers and uprated springs.

Lesley's has the cup/eibach setup on it, you are welcome to have a go at chucking that into a few roundabouts at the weekend if you want mate?

Mmmm not cheap at all, thankfully only every 5 years/72k! Definately have to budget that in significantly then when thinking about buying a car where there is no proof it has been done.

Looks like Cup/Eibach the way to go as I haven't seen any apart from one with decent Gaz coilovers. All seem to be KTR or VMAXX for sale at the moment.

That would be a good to see what her's is like, are you around Saturday as i'm thinking of viewing some on Sunday? I suppose if I bought one with coilovers I can always take them off & sell them after.

I'm free Saturday if you'd like to compare and contrast.

Ive got bilsteins btw.

I'm hoping to drive a standard 172 this week sometime close to Taunton so I don't have to travel too far.

Whereabouts are you Emma as my current car (Leon TDI) is off the road with a blown turbo and my wife has the other car and she is away this weekend. I should be able to get a lift to you from someone.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Yes mate, I'll come and meet you down the bowl or something though is probably easier.

You got my number? If not drop me a PM or facebook message or something.

That sounds like a plan, i'm sure someone will be out and about I can get a lift off. I've sent you a facebook message with my mobile, if you can send me yours.

Hey Dan,

Your Clio sounds really nice, with most of the mod's I would want to do anyway :)

Have you got any pictures you could send me, or have you got any pictures of your car on here?

The other question is what sort of money would you be after?

James.

Thanks for the offer Emma, I will be out on Saturday night with Chip and hopefully Dan. Seems Dan's Clio also has Bilsteins so I could hopefully see what his is like as he might be persuaded to sell it!

It'll be on bilsteins Saturday, but not setup as I'm only fitting them Saturday lol.

Ah right fair enough :) I've heard good things about bilsteins so i'm sure they won't be that bad out of the box.

What sort of ball park figure would you be persuaded to sell for? Might be out of my price range as you seem to have all top quality modifications :)

Ill have a chat with you on sat, I can remove bits and pieces to suit the budget.. But as it stands its pretty well spec'd IMO.
