Clio 172 oil pressure light not coming on when engine is off..

  172 sport
Hello all,

The oil pressure light comes on for a few seconds when the ignition is turned and then goes out before the engine has been started.

I unplugged the oil pressure switch cable and linked it out which made no difference. I guess there should be 12v at the cable with ignition on but I'm only getting 0.6V.

Any one had this problem or knows how to fix it? I'm a bit concerned that I could run the engine with low/no oil pressure and not know anything until its too late!

Thanks in advance

As above, s**t loads of lights come on, then go out when the engine is started?

I am pretty sure its meant to go out and then if there is no pressure it will come on again when the engine is running!
If there is oil in the engine and it doesn't come on when the engine is running I wouldn't worry but i'm sure you can take it to your local garage and they will do a oil pressure test?

Can some turn the ignition on and check their clio 172 to see if its the same, I've had the car 2 years and I think it's always been like it, not too sure though. Its only after I changed the oil and checked the oil light went out afterwards that I noticed it goes out even with the engine not running. I unplugged the oil switch connector and plugged a new switch to it, earthed the switch to the engine block so effectively the switch was seeing zero pressure and still the oil light never came on, Sound weird to me!!

Mine does the same, when i bought the car it came with an oil pump in the boot, so i assume they changed it... Hope someone can help us.

An oil pressure switch works by switching an earth, it's on the front of the block, single wire. Your oil pressure light should stay on all the time the engine isn't running as there's no oil pressure. It should be on with ignition, start engine and go out a second after once oil pressure has achieved the required amount to switch the earth. Any other way and I'd consider it faulty.
I'm intrigued now as I cant imagine it would work any other way unless it's fed via the ecu or intelligent fuse board. Gonna check mine tomorrow

All vehicles will has some sort of pressure switch. Whether it's the conventional way of a switched earth oil switch with a lamp on the binical or via the ecu and only come on during low pressure situations

The Volvo engined Fords is a known one, causing much confusion at the dealerships when people come to order the switch (they cannot find it!). I initially though my sister's Mondeo 2.5T had a fault until I read the manual where it stated the 2.5T does not have an oil pressure warning system. Worrying to say the least.

Wow that's worrying! Though the ST has a gauge and a pressure sensor so I'd assume the ecu would illuminate a bulb of it dropped too low.
