clio 172 cup??? ph2 buying & pics req plz

  impreza sti prodrive
hi, been looking at 172 cups latley, took 1 for test drive yesterday its a 53 plate with 23500 miles on the clock, in good condition has cat back miltech exhaust witch sounds realy nice,

anyway the test drive, the cup felt so much tighter & seemed to hold the road so much better than my old 182ff. anyway its now got me smitten for it.

what is a reasonable price for a 53 plate cup with 23k on it?

i also was looking at a 02 plate cup with private plate on r17cup but decided against as rear bumper had been bucherd to fit a slash cut exhaust & the tourins changed for 182 cup alloys.

I've also been looking at Cups as i'm after another clio. When i asked a similar question about 2 weeks ago i was told around the £4k mark for a 172 with 40,000 miles.

Been out looking at some over the weekend and if you pay less than 4 you get one with 60k + miles. I went and looked at two one had 23,000 miles and was up for £5k and the other had 38,000 miles and was up for £4.5k.

That seems to be the going rate for traders local to me, so any price under £4.5k seems good to me.

i thought it was very low milage, & the service history backs it up, it also has frsh, if i go for it it will need very little tidying up, i recon i could get them to re furb the alloys as there slightly marked. the 1 i was viewing is up for nearly 6k though,i got them down to 5500 but still not sure as is canny steep for a 6yr old cup.

Yeah. 6k is way over priced to be honest.

I paid 4k for an 03 plate with just under 40k on the clock about 6 weeks ago and I thought I paid to much for that really

thats what i thought mate, my arguing point aswell was tht eve seen just as clean cups al be it heigher milage but just as clean for 4k. they wudnt budge on the price at all which is a shamee as i would have snapped it up asap.

  NOTHING
i bought mine 3 weeks ago , its a 52 plate 34k with all belts done foe 4000, which i thought was about right, if thats any help

abit mate yeah.lol. i want to find as newer as posible ie 53-04 plate, the deal i had lined up for the cup was,

all belts to be done, no matter how recient.
all decient tyres fitted. non of this remould crap.
steering wheel repaired around thumb grip. or replaced.
172cup badges on doors replaced. as slightly damaged.
full m.o.t
6 months tax
20 fuel
& i recon i could have got the alloys re-furbed if went for it.

The price of these has plumeted recently (like most cars)

When I brought mine about 10 months ago I payed £6k for a 25k miles tidy cup which at the time was about right (and I looked at lots) - some tired ones were going for around £4-5k and a few low mileage ones like mine were almost £7k.

£4k for one with 23k miles seems like a bargain to me, they are still hard to find with low miles and un-molested condition.

mine if it helps you with pics etc.

Think you've got it in your favour that you live further North than i do. I live just South of London and the cars round me always seem to be the most expensive in the country.

As someone else said if you can't get the price down to a reasonable amount just walk away. Then if they've still got the car in two or three weeks go and make them another offer for it, at he end of the day if they don't sell the car its lost money to them. There's no point paying over the odds for something as your the one who will lose out.

  182
I paid 4k for mine in september on 36k miles and its a minter. 5500 is rediculous.

As for the belts i would rather get the discount off the car and have them done myself, taking it to a specialist as the seller will do it for the cheapest poss and you dont want to mess around timing these cars up. very important

ive got them down to 5k for the cup now, what yous recon? i very much doubt they will go any lower.

I think only you can make the decission on this one.

Some people will say 'thats too much' others may say 'good deal' but it has to be you who's happy at the end of the day. Dealers will always sell cars at a higher price than a private sale, thats the way it is.

Like I said when I brought mine, I was willing to pay over the odds for a good one, I looked at atleast 5 others that were a hell of a lot cheaper but either had higher miles and/or were in poorer condition one way or another.

I would pay 5k for a very well looked after low mileage 53 plate 172 CUP purely and simply because they are hard to find in cherished condition! most have been driven hard, abused one way or another etc its just the type of car unfortunately. If you can find one old lady owner one, thats the one you want lol, and it just aint gonna happen.

If this one seems tidy/well looked after with good history and low miles go for it (and the main thing is probably whether the belts have been done, but again not a disaster if not as you can get them done, I wouldn't let that put me off buying a well looked after car)

One last thing, check your insurance, I don't seem to hear it mentioned on here a lot but they are pretty difficult cars to insure, purely because so many get written off (insurers also seem to frown on the non ABS aswell etc). I had trouble finding places that would actually consider it.

^^^^^^6ive noticed the insurance thing, who are you with??

im going to go for a second viewing tmoro & a 2nd test drive, then i will make my decision, 5k sounds reasonable to me & for the milage & its frsh, i think i wont loose much on it in the long term. but i will only buy it if they put the few faults that i found fixed.

it was slighlty pulling to the left but there is a recipt in history for new track rod ends so my guess is tracking, the 172 cup door badges req changing, steering wheel the o/s thum grip is just starting to come away i want that replacing & the alloys are just stating to alloy bubble i want them re furbed. but those arnt the end of the world.

cheers for your input btw.

no probs.

Dont ever expect to buy a car and gain on it (obviously there are cases for this to be an exception, but not often, prices only go one way)

sounds like the usual problems. Dont assume its just tracking though. ALWAYS get the car HPI checked incase its been in an accident (good chance with a Cup), proper dealers will do the HPI as they wont want you coming back with legal rights etc. Take someone with you who know alot about cars to confirm the problem, could be a number of things.

its from evans halshaw renault, i seen the hpi report its clean but tmoro im guna have a good proper close look at everything as i didnt lift bonnet so not sure if stickers are there, im hopingthey are.lol. just sold my focus for 6k so money is there

im not expecting to gain on it, but im hoping for it to hold somwere near what i will pay for it. drop to max 4k idealy.

my old 182 was a mare to drive, this 1 felt soo much better.

if anyone was interested, i passed on the clio. had 27k not 23k & was oricionaly up for £5991 way way over priced imo.

Way too much emphasis on mileage. A 40k car can still be a dog if it's had 6 hard years, whereas a loved-for 90k will have had all the right work done, parts fitted, etc...

I can't say I'm suprised. If I were to put mine up tomorrow I would try for a top end price like that - not saying I would get it, but from personal experience and knowing people in the trade they are quite hard to get hold of in nice condition.

4k may well get you a private sale Clio cup with average miles say, as someone mentioned earlier, but low mileage good history and well looked after ones especially at a dealer will be pricey purely because ..a)they know someone will want one as they are quite sought after in good cond ..b)they know that you get some sort of peace of mind buying from them (ie HPI clear, a warranty if you want although they are not worth the paper they are written and... c)they are not in any rush to sell ..............

Its all down to personal opinion really like I said, and how much someone wants one. I wanted a real good one, so when I was buying last year that was between 6k and 7k which I was willing to pay, because the ones that were 4k and 5k were just abused.

Totally agree, overall condition is far better/important than mileage, if the owner has looked after it that means far more than something with half the miles that has been abused.
