Car Conked Out - Now Wont Start!

Careful doing so, there is a LOT of voltage around there, can give you a nasty shock, dont go near it with a volt meter or anything like that.

I tried this.

I put a fluke tester onto one of the plugs in the coil pack and then down to earth on the battery.

My fluke said 10V.

I spoke to Dan@519 and he said the voltage would of been to high for my fluke to read.

Now when I took a spark plug out, and put the bottom of it to the engine block I could see the sparks jumping across so I know its sparking.

Didn't really think about what voltage the sparks would have to be at in fairness.

Hmm. Well either my Fluke is fcuked from trying to do the test or the coil pack is way under voltage.

Is there anyway of testing the coilpacks properly?

Sounds stupid, but try pressing your fuel cut off switch down and re-setting it.

Maybe try and get a vid of it turning over too (under bonnet).

I can't see why the timing would have suddenlt slipped after 50k+ since the belt was done, and it's not overdue. It's still worth checking for sure, but there's no logic behind it

Not that i can provide any help but in the past i've had similar problems, if you turn your key to position 2 then wait a minute and try and turn to 3 does it still turn over or nothing at all?

Mine was like the above, if i turned straight away to three it turned over but if i moved to two, waited a second and moved to three it wouldn't turn. Never found out what the problem was, cleaned the relays and changed the rear light cluster and wiring as it was full of water and had corroded, so far its been fine.. fingers crossed!

Random main fuse failure?

Just a process of elimination.

But it could be worth getting the car into someone like dan.

I don't know about this. Ill try it tonight.

I'd do this if he wasn't 200+ mile away.

I'd love to take it to a specialist. RS Tuning is the closest to me in Leeds.

If you need any working parts to test ASAP, I'm relatively close working in peterlee - just holla I have 2 172's doing nothing at the moment all with working sensors etc

Hope you've managed to sort something, f*ck me, my car must know what i'm saying. It's been fine for months, i suddenly mention it on here about how fine it has been and the day after it decided it didn't want to turn on! :(

Nightmare mate.

Ive not sorted mine yet. Its stuck at my mothers which is a pain as i have to make my own way there to even begin work on it. Really need to get it back home.

Craig Davis popped round tonight and has talked me though a few bits and bobs. Going to remove the engine mount tomorrow and do a pressure test if the cambelt is in one piece.

I went round last nite to check the car over for sam, everything's pointing to the cambelt slipping or being snapped, the condition of the Aux belt is very poor & its hanging over the edge of the PAS pulley by 1 tooth, all the covers are on the cambelt so i couldn't see the if it had snapped & had no tools with me from finishing work. Ive told sam to support the engine & remove the engine mount to inspect the belt & see whats what. Hopefully its not the belt & just a stupid sensor playing up.

After you spotted that Craig, Sam called me and I recon it's shredded a piece of belt off and it's wrapped round the bottom pulley and slipped the cam timing

Right. Made some progress with this.
I've took the engine mount off and the cambelt is in one piece thank god.

Turned it over as well to check the condition right around the cambelt and all is good.

The aux belt does look worse for where.

Spoke to Dan@519 and he said I might of took a tooth off the aux belt and it could of got caught up with the bottom crank/pulley that the cambelt and aux belt go to.

I've checked all 3 earths on the car and they are all really tight and only slight corrosion on one of them. (I did give it a clean up though.)

I got a SnapOn fault tester off a mate of mine. Didn't really know how to use it, but found a load of airbag faults and some others.

I found;

266 - 02 Sensor Signal Before Cat
301 - Brake Pedal Sensor Circuit
309 - Cruise Control / Speed Limiter Brake Pedal Switch

Like I say, I couldn't figure out how to use the film properly.

It did ask me what engine there was in my car. I knew it was a F4R but there was 3 letters / numbers before it.

I selected 2005 Clio ll .B2P F4R (2.0L MPI)

I don't know what that is, it just sounded close.

Will that make a difference?

I've disconnected the battery, going to leave it a few hours then go back and try again and also do a compression test on the cylinders.

If anyone can think of anything else it could be I'd really appreciate the input.

Sam.

Aux Belt - This is the tatty one!

The fault tester.

If anyone knows how to work these properly to find faults i'd much appreciate a guide or something. :D

that aux belt is FUUUUUUUUCKEEDDDDDDD

sorry mate, you nee the timing checked, there's no point doing anything else until that's done

Looks like the belt isnt running true on the pulley there, is your alternator loose or anything like that?

I know the aux belt is f**ked. I think thats the power steering pulley it does sit on to well but i may be wrong ??

Done a pressure check on each cylinder.

I didnt know which order they where numbered so did this on paint.

PSI.png

By the looks of things there about 50% under pressure in each cylinder.

I know im looking on the bright side now, as the timing is out, but what are the chances that its slipped a tooth causing the valves to not be fully closed thus giving close readings across 4 cylinders ?

Thanks for your help.

Sam!

Bent valves will generally give no compression so you might get lucky.

Have you got a leak down tester?

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
It pumps compressed air into the cylinder and measures how much leaks, and then by listening to where it leaks from you can find out where the problem is.

Hissing at the inlet filter for example means poor inlet valve seal (ie bent valve)

these symptoms are exactly the same as what i saw last year when my bottom pulley broke up. think compressions should be about 185 psi ish....

hope you have been lucky mate. think there is a quick check you can do . set it at tdc and remove the plugs and the ends of the cams should line up. no idea if that is 100% as i cant remember. i checked it in a similar way and mine were miles out...

Owen is coming down tomorrow to check the timing on it.

I'm hoping its just slipped and I havnt done much internal damage. Only time will tell.

Ill let you all know.

Well, this is the bit i have been dreading.

Stockton-on-Tees-20121023-00547.jpg

The above is a picture of the camshafts when the crank is locked in with the pin.

They have slipped round nearly 45 degrees out of line which obviously isn't good.

Don't know if any valve damage has been done yet but when turning the crank i could feel something hitting something else, which is obviously piston meeting valve.

Ill keep you all up to date though.

Thanks again for your help.

Sam!

Thats bad luck mate, you going to rebuild that lump then? When my (hutchies) valve snapped it destroyed the head but only damaged 1 piston, I may have a spare piston out of this lump I've got if it helps
