camera advice please gurus!

Icurrently have a Kodak easyshare DX4330 that is quite a few years old now so i quite s**t tbh.

I would like a camera so i can do those cool pictures where the car lights are left trialing etc and plus i would like a camera good enough so that i could blow the images up.

What is going to be best?

Will a normal digital camera do this or will i need an slr one or something?

Advice needed for a good beginner photographer that would like a good beginner camera.

i have read the other threads about cameras but i find them quite confusing.

What is an slr? why is it better than a normal digital camera etc?

I think you can do it with a compact camera but you will need a tri-pod and a slow shutter speed.
