cambelt change - got a strange noise

Had my Cam & Aux Belt done this week - decided to risk non specialist (I know.. ) proper tools were used, but they had never done one before.

Anyway I suspect they have buggered it up as I have a strange noise. It's hard to describe but it only starts making the noise at around 5k rpm then goes away after about 6k rpm. It sounds kind of like a combination of something rubbing and vibrating ? Really hard to describe what it sounds like. Also I can make it do the noise briefly at lower revs if I just jab the accelerator really sharp.

Power doesn't seem down, at all, would it not be well down if they had messed up the timing ? Any ideas what they have managed to do ?

I had a similar noise on my old 172 when it was done wrong. The belt was the wrong side of the tensioner.

Not saying it's what's wrong with yours, but it may be?

Yes under hard acceleration, I don't know about going through slowly actually, i've not tried that. I've obviously been keeping the revs down since I first noticed it to try and avoid/minimise any damage... I can go give it a try later though.

Ignore my earlier comments about certain rev range.

I've just been out in it and tested it some more. It is under hard acceleration only it does it - mainly only noticeable in first and second gear. As I mentioned before power is almost certainly not down, it seems to pull as normal when making the noise, no juddering or anything like that.

That sounds quite bad! Almost like a slack belt hitting the casing?

lol but only say that cos it happened to mine. I'm not mechanically minded.

What happened with yours then ? did it break completely or was you just aware of something being wrong ?

check the aux belt tensioner hasn't gone over center when it's been taken off. If it does the spring can touch the belt and the belt wont be tight enough.

I don't think it's related to the aux belt. When I had it done the part for the Aux belt didn't come in time so they just did the cambelt and I took it back a couple of days later to have the aux done... and it was doing it before the Aux was done.
