Cam dephaser pulley - how big a job?

  2118'd Iceberg Ph2 172
I ask as mine needs replacing, the bearing is making the noises. My cambelt and tensioners however weren't done very long ago so do not need doing. How big a job is it? I'll be doing it myself at the same time as replacing pas pump and aux belt.

Cheers me dears. :D

about as big a job as the cambelt surely?

both pulleys have to be slackened to allow proper tensioning of the cambelt so i assume 'all' you have to do is replace the dephaser and refit the cambelt and then tension it up

one of the engine guru's will clear this up though

This is what I was thinking to be honest.... never really dabbled in cambelts and am slightly apprehensive. Might just put up with the noise... probably not a good idea though.

if you haven't dabbled in cambelts before the F4R is not a good place to start!

alot of people on here will tell horror stories of how renault specialists have got the timing wrong doing the F4R, best left to an experienced renault tech.

not sure which ones are around your area?

Don't just ignore it either, I think theres a chance the pulley can collapse at anytime = nailed engine.

Righty ho, all good advice methinks.

And yep I heard about the floating crankshaft pulley, very clever Renault :S

Its been doing the noise since I've got it (2500 miles ish), so not going to risk it collapsing any longer. My cambelt and tensioners were done 20k miles ago and aren't due for another 4 years or 50k miles or so (cars on 86k, belts done on 65k), is it worth changing the belts and tensioners at the same time as dephaser pulley? Apart from the extra £100 (GSF), would there be substantially more labour?

Cheers guys.

May as well replace everything matey, it all has to come for for the dephaser to be changed iirc

You've been very very lucky it lasted that long, your sure its the dephaser? They don't tend to last that long afaik. If the belt comes off it should be replaced as they shouldn't be retensioned, aux belt is the same story and I wouldn't skimp on it. If the tensioners/idlers were only changed a year ago I wouldn't bother replacing them as long as they're no obvious problems with them.

At Snett on saturday, the guy from Cit-Ren (don't know whether anyone knows of him, track prepped 172 Cup, sign written "Cit-Ren") heard my engine on idle and instantly said the dephaser pulley bearing had gone. I had noticed it but didn't really know any different as I've not stuck my head in many 172 engine bays while idling.

Its tricky to describe, but is a kind of dry ticking (ever so slightly whiney), but not tappety ticking..... Its quite subtle tbh.

Does anyone have a video of their engines running with this problem? I will try and get a video of mine running up on here later to see if the noise comes through it.

Side issue purely out of interest, if this pulley is at fault, then does this then mean the cam phasing (or variable cam timing, whatever you want to call it) is not functioning? I guess this will only really then have a knock on effect on emissions rather then any real driveability issues. Either way it ain't right!

Cars not being driven for next 5 weeks anyway so plenty of time to get it sorted.

My dephaser sounded like this shortly before shearing off.

Thanks for that. Maybe I need to rethink, as mine is nothing like that whatsoever, and no where near as obvious.

I'll try getting a video of it now. Think its too subtle to even pick up on camera but I'll have a try.

Ok I'm starting to think its fine now, a little confused after being told that at Snett. Anyway here's a rec of my 172 at idle, ignore the screeching sound in the background, the pas pump is pushing fresh air!! Got a new pump to put on in next week or so. Sorry don't know how to post a youtube vid directly on the forum.

They are by nature very whiney, tappety engines. Everyone ive heard sounds slightly different but they all seem to whistle and whine etc. I would say theres nothing to worry about from the vid you've posted. Just get the PAS sorted first and go from there.

Cool that sounds fine then. I did think this was just the way the F4R sounded until Mr Cit-Ren said my dephaser pulley bearing had gone on sat at Snett. After listening to what it sounds like when they've gone, mine certainly hasn't.

Cheers people, just saved me a fair wad of cash, I would have been well disappointed after changing that then finding it sound exactly the same!! :S

I dont knwo why people bang on saying the 172 belt id a night mare floating crank etc, if you lock it all up with the tool then it will be perfectly fine. the lockibg kit cost me £65 to lock cams and crank
