Brake pedal sensor

  BlackGold 182
Had problems with brake lights and just had a go of adjusting it but I can't seem to get it to sit right, Its obviously meant to click when u push in but it doesn't pull out? So now seems like Its on constantly or not at all?

How would I know if it's broken or not?

You can check the circuit works and rule out an adjustment issue by removing the switch from its bracket and with it connected up still simply 'work' the switch; If brake light operation is observed to be correct then you need to setup the switch position correctly. If not, you will need to test the switch - Testing a "BPS" is simple as they're nothing more than a "Push to close" switch.

What you will need:
  • A digital Multi-Meter with "Diode" or "Continuity" test feature
  • The Brake Pedal Switch removed from the vehicle and in your hand
Turn on the DMM and switch it to "Diode" or "Continuity" mode then, using the two probes, connect them on to the brake pedal switch pins (It doesn't matter which way round). When the pedal switch is 'at rest' the circuit is "closed" (eg. it is making a connection and would be telling the brake lights to turn on) so your multi-meter should be emitting a "Tone" which is confirmation that a connection between the two pins has been established. Then, when you operate the switch button the circuit will become "open" and so the "Tone" should now stop... If it doesn't shut up or make the tone to start with the switch is FUBAR'd and needs replacing.

If you get to this stage and the brake lights still don't work then there is a wiring issue in the cars infrastructure and that circuit will need checking over for breaks and connection issues.
