Being 30 and in a 182

is she not just embarrased cause all her friends other halfs are driving VAG and similar cars, if you enjoy a car, doesn't matter what it is at any age, why have something to suit your age when you will be bored out of your mind just to make her happy

That's kinda what I was wanting to say.

I do see a lot of people with kids running around in 182s. That's great. Best of both worlds imo.

Then again chavs have given them a bit of a bad name, there are some shocking examples in my area so you end up tarred with the brush.

I bet a lit of people have changed cars on this forum because they worry about what people think. There's nothing wrong with that imo. Sometimes it's nice to have something classy on the drive.

I don't see that many 1*2s around my way, let alone badly modified examples.

IMO if people have changed cars on this forum, or in general due to what people think then that is a sorry state of affairs TBH.

I can't help thinking less of people that surcome to the dull side of driving. I don't feel the need to tell them their car is boring but they always feel inclined to express their irrelevant opinion. Worst is they always seem to know very little beyond the basic facts the salesman told them or the old wives tales that a car maker never seems to be able to shed.

182 is classy

Really? There are a lot of things. Classy ain't one of them

Of course Fletch. I love your bus. I love 1*2s in general.

We have the likes of Gaz85, and Ally local with immense examples of RS Clios. There are still a lot of chavtastic ones out there.

People might change their car because they want to impress people. Dave admitted he hated turning up to his job in the Trophy. A lot of others have as well.

Sometimes your job requires a certain look. The engineers that come to my work are told in no uncertain terms that the compsny car they get must give off the right image.

I have a 172 and i was 40 last sunday,i have owned many cars from £50 to £17000 and this is my favorite.

Mates sometimes take the push out of me for having a 'chav car', at 24 I can easily get away with it, I like the little blue thing and that's all that matters.

I think hot hatches are acceptable at any age, I don't think a modified hot hatch is a good look for anyone over 40 though! Unless it's very subtle... there's a 40ish y/o near me with a barryboy saxo vtr: red with carbon bonnet etc, not cool.

30!! god i wish i was 30 again. I'm 43 and just bought my first 172 cup late last year. Absolutely love the car, the Yozza is a touch loud and the coilovers a tad stiff for the shocking roads around here but other than that, i think it's a damn good motor. Obviously i have to put up with endless "mid life crisis" jibes, but who cares. I think i'm going to keep it forever. Lol.:rasp:

I really, really feel sorry for people in that situation. More often than not - they are railroaded by the company to pick one of three German badges and far more likely, the best in its class for economy and for it's trade-in value three years down the line.

Over the years, I've had countless suppliers coming in and rolling up in the same, predictable, dark coloured barge. Jesus, work is tiresome/boring/stressful enough as it is without having to go too and from it in the same tin can that 12.5 million people on the road seem to have. If someone turns up in something unusual, it triggers something to chat about immediately - in fact one supplier had a red 197 and we spent twice as long in the car park outside, talking about Clios than we did for the meeting itself. ;)

Anyway, back on topic. As for being 30 with a 182 - I ordered mine when I was 29 and couldn't get insured on the 182 until I was 30?! I'm 37 now and still have the little black gold Clio - which hopefully I will never get rid of. And only a week ago, I took the plunge and nabbed myself an Evo VI - so go figure? People who simply use their cars as a transport from A to B will never understand. Those same people start moaning at 5.25pm about the traffic and the drive home. For me, that's the best part of the day...

I wouldnt worry, spotted these two are at snetterton yesterday. They are older than 50.

I turned 24 last month, and starting to feel like a bit of a tool driving round in a modified yellow 106 gti..IMO they're the sort of vehicle that suits the 18-23 bracket. whereas i've always thought the renaultsport range are fine for 30+ :D

I'm 30 and get asked the same question by my other half, had my first one when I was 21 sold it after 6 exellent years to fund a business venture, I then bought my current one 2 years ago, funny thing is though when i took it off the road to fit a turbo she was like "where is the Clio I miss it" ffs

Feel good now i have read this - 36 and was debating getting shut of my RB 182 this year but the wife reckons i'll regret it having owned from new and hardly used it. It spends all week in the garage as i get the train to work and I sometimes think what's the point in owning it (only cover about 1k a year in it)- that's until I get out and drive it! Still makes me smile.

32 here. My wife isn't keen on the 182 at all, but she understands why I want it. Couldn't give a hoot what anyone else thinks really, I used to get all sorts of stick from colleagues but the true petrol heads knew why I had it!

The 197/200 are more "acceptable" i'd say, infact the 197 standard is actually very subtle. The 200 is a bit more bold.

Too right, I actually love driving, Astra van, gf's ZS fiesta, or the 197...... Its in my blood, and thats my thing I suppose!

30 in March and still love driving the 172. Had it for 5 years now. Just forked out for a new cambelt/aux and dephaser so I'll be keeping it for the next few years.

If you keep it totally standard you'll be OK. You'll only look like a dick if your driving around on 19s, decatted, silvervisions, turdinnins, tow hook etc etc.

I think the the OP needs a new wife! Pics needed btw!

30 in a few weeks, it was the missus idea to buy another 172 (had one in my early twenties) as she said I may as well own something I really like again. No regrets, I don't see the point in owning something 'sensible looking' just because you're a bit older. They're fairly practical/safe cars as it is so I shouldn't even have the need to change once kids arrive (especially as the other half as a Focus).

I get a few 'boy racer' comments at work, but couldn't care less to be honest. Enjoying driving/cleaning/photographing my car on a regular basis far outweighs any negative attention it gets. I would like to put it back to standard (currently has black alloys and badges), most standard Renaultsport's are subtle enough to blend in quite nicely.

As far as 197/200s go, I would say the majority of owners around my area are older (at least 40 plus), always brings a smile to my face seeing a 50+ guy enjoying his 200, mainly because I hope that's me in twenty years time (assuming fun cars still exist).

Im 40 , ive always loved hot hatches, the good lady even likes it "because it's cute" i could not give a f**k what anybody else think's,im happy so the world is all fine in my eyes :)

37 and have never paid much attention to what others think of my car choice. Clio always put a smile on my face and is the complete antidote to my diesel company POS. :race:

im 41 ive had my 182from new 6 years our lass loves it as much as me age has got totally nowt to do with it life is to short to worry about crap like that. but i will say in my opinion youre better of having youre car standard and original the older you get.

30 this year and got my first 182 recently, absolutely love it. Perhaps getting a bit old for too many stickers on the car though?

Next year, I intend on getting a VTS and doing that up for a little project so it looks identical to the VTS I miss now so much! Don't care if I'm 31/32 then lol!!!

Im 31 had my cup since i was 25 I often think of getting rid and get a bit of good hearted stick from work mates etc but i enjoy it and its worth sod all really in todays market so may as well keep it.
Being pretty much standard to look at helps imo but I do have the ITB's but I dont hoon around I just save that for country blasts out the way and the odd track visit.
My mrs does says why dont you get rid and she doesnt really like riding in it, but last night when i said 'you can drive' she ripped the keys out my hand!!! ;)
