auto ac vs just setting a temp

  monaco 172
After a thread I saw the other day about the auto button on the climate control I've been having a play.

I normally just set my temp to 20c and leave it at that and its normally quite comfortable.

Today I tried the auto button at 20c and all that happened was it just turned on the air con blasting cold air out.

I upped the temp to 25c and still it was blasting out cold air.

It was only 12c outside so I put both windows down thinking it may turn off the air con to warm up the cabin but it just continued to blast out cold air till I turned off the air con.

What happens when you just control the temper without using the auto button? Other than turn on the air con.

Could my cabin temp sensor be knackered making the unit think the cabin is always hot which is why the air con never goes off?
